 | Total Eclipse of the Heart |
If you caught the lunar eclipse last night, chances are you had quite a show. Saturn was also up there, just to the lower left of the moon. I was lucky enough that my mother-in-law called to tell me about it, otherwise I would have missed it myself!
So, when she called, I quickly put on my two layers of barn flannels, my goofy stocking hat with the pom-pom on top, gloves and tennis shoes. I grabbed my telescope and out the door I went. Many of you know that my Hubakin got me a great telescope for my birthday. I am an amateur (at best) astronomer, so this event was right up my alley! The moon looked amazing - slightly orange. It reminded me of a cantaloupe! Another really awesome sight was Saturn - I could even see the rings with my telescope. I can't tell you how excited I was!
It was about 7 degrees outside, but I didn't notice. The sky was amazing. I haven't seen a clear sky like that in a long time! I didn't even notice the cold as I set up and took my first look at the eclipsing moon...so cool.
The first thing I thought about was amidalooine, PadmeSkywalker77 and anakinside1, because they came to my house last July when I first got the 'scope, and we had loads of fun with it - I wished they could have been there with me.
The next thought that entered my mind - and stayed there - was of my dad. He passed away almost ten years ago, but every time I gaze upward toward the Heavens at night, I always think of him. We would spend hours in the summer together watching for shooting stars, charting constellations and peering through our telescope at the moon and whatever else we could find. Events like last night, although rare, would fill my heart with wonder, awe and an excitement I can't explain.
The telescope we used was homemade. My dad was a mix of MacGyver and Maxwell Smart - he could take pieces, scraps and a little bit of adhesive and make just about anything. I remember the telescope as this big cardboard tube, about 6" in diameter. He used a mirror, some screws and steel, and a smaller metal tube for the lens holder. I don't remember what he used for magnification - probably a magnifying glass hand-beveled to perfection! He mounted it on an old camera tripod with some hinges. That was our telescope. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. We probably could have afforded to actually buy one, but if my dad could make it - it was made.
My dad, although he only went to the 7th grade, was the most intelligent person I've ever met. He was self-taught, became a draftsman and later worked out schematics for machines that produced ball-bearings. He never stopped educating himself. If he could learn it, he would. I'm sure that had a big impact on why I became an educator myself.
So now, even as an adult, the night sky holds special meaning for me. When I glance at the Heavens, I believe I am looking at Heaven - toward my dad and all my loved ones who are there with him. Last summer, in August, I spent most of the night watching the Perseid meteor shower, and found myself actually talking to my dad. Of course I didn't expect a reply, but some of the shooting stars seemed to coincide with "our" conversation. Coincidence? Wishful thinking? Delusions? Perhaps.
Last night filled me with that awe, wonder and excitement once again. I told my Hubakin when I came in (only because the tips of my fingers started going numb) that doing what I just did invigorates my soul. I really needed it. I have been going through a lot of poodoo lately and have NOT been myself, to say the least. Being on that high caused me to not fall asleep until after 1:00 a.m., but today I have more energy than I have had in weeks.
The next lunar eclipse will be December 20, 2010. I'm marking my calendar now.
MTFBWY...always.

Awwww, beautiful, MO2!
I was lucky enough last night to have the most wonderful Southwest pilot EVER!! On my flight to San Fransisco to visit our friend, Mina, he zig-zagged the plane so that everyone on the plane could see the eclipse out the little windows! Spectacular!! I watched it for as long as possible, but what a treat!
I'm glad you got to see it and didn't get frost bite!

Wow. Just...wow. You were on my mind much of last night as I looked at that eclipse when the clouds permitted. What fun we had that night back in July...a night I'll never, ever forget. I stood there right next to you and as1 and ps77, and it never really occurred to me that you looked toward your dad as you looked toward the heavens. I feel special to have had the opportunity to do something so meaningful to you, with you.
As with so many things since discovering this e-world of ours, something as simple as gazing at the moon becomes more significant...more real.
Love you...
(hg...have fun!!)

It was about 7 degrees outside, but I didn't notice.
I did!! I was watching it while waiting for my train, then again waiting for my bus, (then I watched from the bus window...I was warm ), then again while walking the few blocks home! A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...
Those are some truly special memories you have of spending time in the stars with your dad. I'm so glad you got to experience that wonder & excitement again last night. It was a beautiful sight, to say the least.

Guys like that are so cool! Reminds me of a scene from "Six Days, Seven Nights" (starring HARRISON FORD):
Robin: Aren't you one of those guys?
Quinn: What guys?
Robin: Those guy guys, you know, those guys with skills.
Quinn: Skills?
Robin: Yeah. You send them into the wilderness with a pocket knife and a Q-tip and they build you a shopping mall.

Thanks for sharing these memories, MO2YP. Your dad must have been something special, to educate himself like that. It's wonderful that you and he had something in common to share.
I have been going through a lot of poodoo lately

Dad's can be special too Indeed. Our relationship was far from perfect, trust me, but it was definitely one of those things that we saw eye-to-eye on, and those are the memories I treasure most, not the bickering and such, ya know?!
You were on my mind much of last night Awww...thanks, babe!
I feel special to have had the opportunity to do something so meaningful to you, with you. thanks - I'm sure we will share much more in the future as well!

Oh ####, oh ####, oh ####! You don't even know how much this mirrors my life. How many times have we said this before?
My dad and I spent hours as amateur astronomers together. I actually belonged to the Astronomy book of the month club and got "Odyssey" magazine. AND -- get this -- we used my dad's HOMEMADE scope. Like you, my dad didn't go far in school -- but boy was he smart. It's been 4 years now that he's been gone. . .
Thank you for sharing this. This is why we blog, right? You never know who you're going to affect! Thanks for reminding me of the happy memories with my dad. And you bet, I was thinking of him last night while watching the eclipse.
And, no -- I'm not crying right now!

Awww!!! ((((hugs))))
I'm all misty! What wonderful memories!
It was about 7 degrees outside, but I didn't notice. It was a little warmer than that here.
The sky was amazing. I haven't seen a clear sky like that in a long time! Lucky! I caught about the first 30 minutes, then it clouded over. The clouds did have kind of an orange hue, though. That was pretty neat.
Thank you for this wonderful, wonderful entry! I'm positive there is a special place in heaven for Daddies.

Mo2YP... what a site the eclipse was indeed.
I thought that I had missed it until, after tucking the apprentices into bed, I took the dog out for his bedtime saunter ...
I looked up at the sky and saw the most amazing sky I've seen in months... since the summer really when I went tent camping for the very first time.
Completely excited, I went into my eldest apprentice's room to see if she was still awake. I put on DPM's long coat and K2 put on my sub-zero parka and we just stood there... gazing up at the sky.
I pointed out Saturn and Orion and we came in, when we started shivering.
What a sight indeed.... nice blog!

Hey there... you with the stars in your eyes....
I missed the eclipse! I didn't even know about it until it was over! Oh, well, I'll be circling that date then.... D
I really enjoyed reading this, and of course, it reminded me so much of my dad, who as an old-school guy could really make or fix anything... he was an electrician by trade... and I really don't think they make 'em like that anymore. I'm so glad that you have this special thing, the night sky, that ties you to your father now that he's gone... it's something no one can touch, yet is seen by all. It's so important to go on living your life while still making the time to remember... that's what keeps us all alive. Beautiful entry.

Great blog. I watched with my dad from a courtyard at our hotel in Mystic. We were standing right in front of this statue of a family of whales and could see the eclipse very clearly. A great experience.
The next lunar eclipse will be December 20, 2010. I'm marking my calendar now.
Did you know that's Sagan Day? Creepy coincidence...
