Designer Bag versus the R2D2 Aluminum Dome Part
It has been almost a year since I have joined the Artoo Builders Club on yahoo.com. I am still reading the e-mails, the various sites, instructions, etc on building Artoo. I have no electronic experience. I am someone who has to get help connecting the DVD player to the TV set or why my computer is not connecting to the internet, but I am on-line surfing the boards taking notes sorting through the mail, reading the threads, viewing picture, etc.

You see the only thing that I can say that I have ever "built" are sand castles and birthday cakes. And even then, I have not made an R2D2 birthday cake!

I have acquaintances who love beautiful fashion - women who think getting that Kate Spade bag on-sale or buying clothes at the Black and White Store or those beautiful shoes at Aldo are what makes life fun - outside of God, Family, Friends, and helping people in need, of course. I have to admit, my friend at work who enjoys watching Star Wars and IronMan or will tell her boss that she has to leave early to watch Dark Knight on Friday night, also loves her designer Coach bags. Yes, bags is plural - she has more than one Coach bag. (Granted I have another friend who refuses to buy the real Coach bags in department stores because she can get fake ones elsewhere). Come to think of it, who am I to have even admitted having friends such as these? I mean, I am someone who loves her pedicures. BTW, I do not own a stylish Coach bag.

So, instead of getting great high-fashion deals on Labor Day, I will be buying parts to build Artoo in the next several ( or more) years. I mean, isn't owning Star Wars costume(s), Star Wars toys, Star Wars books, etc, a priceless hobby?

EDIT: 9/2/2008

I will be getting the dome on Friday!!! If I understood the ArtooBuilder correctly, it is the "Canon"-sized dome that is based on the one used in EP3 - "the R&J dome". I will have to put my skills of "sanding" to shiny up the dome... I haven't decided on the colors yet. Since there are already two classic R2s in the midwest, I may need to try other colors, but I so love R2 as he is... Anyway, my contact said that he was glad I was local so that we wouldn't have to take the risk of it getting lost or damaged in the mail - some people had gotten their parts damaged by the brown-uniformed delivery man...

EDIT: 10/6/2009

Okay, so I have parts of the Artoo frame to glue together, but I have not done anything more. I need time and a big jug of plumber's glue.

LOL! Um, thanks, I will post pics. Just got an e-mail from one of the members already in getting the most important piece - the dome :) A few or several years may be just an understatement.

I know someone in the Midwest Base of the Rebel Legion who have Artoo Units with their pics posted in the forum threads. You can go to the website here:

Hopefully you will get linked there - if not you can Google MidWest Base and it should come up...

Yes!!! :D

Coach bag? Wha? ;) No, I don't own any either, but spending my money on SW stuff is much more rewarding. :)

Go for the dome! I got my purse at Wal-Mart... been serving me well for three years now... not bad for $9.97... LOL

Your Artoo will be with you a lot longer than that!

I think you made a good decision. ;) Fashion statements will come and go, but Star Wars? Star Wars is forever! :D

:^O

Cheesy, but totally true, right?

hansgirl3, you are absolutely right...SW stuff is definitely more rewarding - I love how the kids (and some adults) love seeing my star wars toys in the office -they could care less about a Coach bag ;)

Yes, Granny-Wan, Artoo will definitely be with me longer than a purse. Not bad to have a $10 purse that has lasted more than 3 years. :)

Totally true - I absolutely agree, "Star Wars is forever", jediprincess77!!! B-)

I will. This may be the key to keep my moving forward with this project. I tend to have a lot of unfinished projects at home :p

Things are going pretty quickly!
This means my money will be going quickly too. LOL!

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I don't always check my e-mail account attached to my StarWars membership. I will e-mail you later, but the two most important places to go is 1) Astromech.net and to join the forums there and 2) Join yahoo r2 builders group. I actually started with the Yahoo group first....

Anyway there are awesome guys and a few gals there for advice, but I find that the most important thing to do is to READ, READ, and READ (besides saving your money for the parts!).
