I am very excited to have gotten to the OT in one piece, and now I can get started on ANH. As I continue with my breakdown of all six SW movies.
ANH was the first one the majority of the SW community saw, and outside of the SW community as well. Some people of the 'older' generation were lucky, or fortunate enough to see it in the cinema, which would have been an unforgettable experience. I am still upset with my parents for not having me earlier so I could see it then. But, despite only being 14, the first movie I ever saw was ANH.
ANH was the building block for not just the rest of the SW saga, but for Hollywood as well. It introduced a new form of storytelling, special effects, and movie making in general.
Since I have memorized the bonus DVD, Empire of Dreams, I was able to see what life was like back then, and how SW had such an impact of the world. George Lucas was such a smart man, that despite all of the woes of production, directing, and editing it still came together to be the best movie of all time.
OK, now that I have the behind the scenes stuff out of the way, now for the meat and potatoes. Star Wars: A New Hope was a story of how some of the simplest people could become galactic hero's in an instant. Luke Skywalker was a flat out hero. He was a character that brought you through the story, and taught you so much, about life, and the life of a Jedi. Here was a kid that had problems with his Uncle Owen lying to him, and holding him back from his true potential. His best friend had moved onto the academy, and he couldn't go to the Toshi Station to pick up some power converters. What torture

. Just when things couldn't get any worse, they got better, from a certain point of view. If that red droid hadn't of had a bad motivator, I don't think any of us would be here right now. Talk about a big break. So to make a long story short, his R2-D2 escapes, he meets Old Ben, learns that his father is a Jedi and that he is Jedi, his Aunt and Uncle get killed, he meets Han, gets the babe, blows up the Death Star, and becomes the hero of the Republic, all thanks to R2-D2 for giving him the chance to become great. I guess maybe it was the will of the force! Anyway, ANH introduced a hero, and great character to the saga named Luke Skywalker, and he is bound to become a character none of us will forget any time soon.
If you asked a lot of people who their favorite character was from ANH, I would bet good money that majority would say Han Solo. He was the character that everyone wanted to be like. He had the swagger, the smirk, the looks, and the skills that a lot of people would enjoy. He was the peoples leader, and their hero as well. Han had probably the sickest piloting skills the galaxy had seen in a long time. It was just fun to watch him whenever he was in the picture, a real treat. I mean, anyone that can make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs deserves some props.
Princess Leia wasn't a major focus of ANH. All you new really was that she got her planet blown out of the galaxy, she didn't like Wookies, and was a control freak. Don't get me wrong, she was a babe, but there wasn't a main focus on her character really until ESB. She was a crowd favorite with the ladies, because she was a leader, and a woman of pride. That's very respectable.
The old wizard, Obi-Wan Kenobi, was a vital part to the movie. I you watch all of the movies in chronological order, it is cool compare Obi of ROTS and ANH, and he was a great teacher, that let the force flow through him. The fight at the end didn't seem to have as much flare, unless you saw the ROTS fight between the two. Old Ben was the teacher, and as we all learned in grade school, you must respect your elders, and teachers.
ANH was a fun and exciting movie to watch. It had lines that we still quote unto this day, and the most memorable characters the Hollywood had seen. It was John Williams first SW movie, and I must say, he didn't disappoint at all. I smile when ever I see the Death Star trench run scene, and I just remember how many great scenes were in this film, and lines. From the chasm scene with Luke and Leia, to the binary sunset, Star Wars: A New Hope brought a lot of hope for generations of film makers, movie goers, children, and I guess everyone!
