I have recently located some information concerning Yoda, which may serve to combat some of the enigma which has surrounded him since The Empire Strikes Back first introduced us to this backward-talking, wiscracking, dimunitive creature.

Yoda and Yaddle (but, contrary to popular belief, not Even Piell) are of a species known as the Whills, from a small planet beyond the Outer Rim. Although it has not been substantiated, it has been suggested that, like the Yuzaan Vong, and perhaps the species of Darth Nihlus, Whills reside within another galaxy (but not ours, I think).

Additional suggestions have been fowarded that Yoda, specifically, turned to the Dark Side in his relative youth, before the birth of Jedi such as Mace Windu or Qui-Gon Jinn. For further information which can be interpreted in several ways, the novels "Yoda: Dark Rendezvous", "Legacy of the Jedi", and "Secrets of the Jedi" can be consulted. Note that Yoda made several refereces concerning the Dark Side, personally, to Count Dooku. (although, also contrary to popluar belief, Yoda was not Dooku's master, even though it is stated so, incorrectly, in several, earlier, guidebooks-Thame Cerulin was Dooku's master)

It is rumored that, in the next several years, Lucas Books may release a novel entitled "The Secret Book of the Whills", further enlightening us as to the nature of this mysterious species.
