Origins of the Force
During the release period of episode III, Wired magazine had an interview with George Lucas and the interviewer asked him about the idea behind the Force, how he came up with it. He quoted to Lucas something from a film (or a short film, can't remember) by a particular filmmaker (again, I can't remember his name) who inspired Lucas:

"Many people feel that in the contemplation of nature and in communication with other living things, they become aware of some kind of force, or something, behind this apparent mask which we see in front of us, and they call it God."

I can't remember Lucas' exact response when asked about it, but he hinted that yes, that is one of the things which inspired the Force in Star Wars. Also, notice the word "force" in it. More likely than not, that is where Lucas got the idea to call his Star Wars jedi religion "The Force".

So, there you go. I found that quote to be quite insighful into the mysteries of life, something which you can use to describe the concept of the Force, and I thought it would be a very interesting bit of Star Wars trivia to share with all of you.

Very interesting! I have mentioned before that as a 9 yr old in 1977, I just knew that the Light side of the Force was God, even before the bumper stickers, hee hee! The dark side was satan banished from heaven, having his demons and the whole storyline based on "Good vs. evil".

I have always held notion that the Force is based on the ancient Chinese concept of "chi". The Force is actually based on many real world spiritual, religious, mythological, and scientific concepts.

What Son of a Bith said. ^^^

Also, I think the reason it resonates with so many people is you don't even have to believe in God or like the idea of God to like the idea of the Force. What's great about it is that it's *impersonal* and non-judgmental.

Yes, the concept of the force is based on many religions and Lucas did a whole lot of research into that. The quote in the blog above is just one of the many things which inspired him.

I see that what it means is personal to the one interpreting it. Thats what makes it so cool. Like Froster said, impersonal and non-judgemental... comforting...

The Force is definately a compilation of many religious beliefs. For example, you could say that Anakin and Luke could represent Christ (Anakin is basically a Christ figure that pulls himslef down off the cross and Luke is a Christ figure that accepts his suffering). In that sense, The Force could be seen as God and the Midichlorians could be seen as The Holy Spirit (that which speaks the will of God)...

...He also embraces Budhist philosophy with the battle bewteen technology and spirituality and Chinese philospophy with the Yin and Yang (light and dark side). Star Wars also embraces a very modern spirituality, the idea of the collective unconscious connecting all living things and the idea that the evil that men do creates a counteraction in nature. GL does a good job of blending so many different spiritual ideas without really pushing one as being correct and without being judgemental. It really is a supern job of capturing the basic ideas of human spiritual philosophy.
