 | "Here we go again" |
Remember when you heard the breaking news? The day a friend or a relative told you that there was going to be a new Star Wars movie? If you were anything like me, you probably jumped straight up in the air and pumped your fist in victory. I was sitting in the waiting room of my dentist's office and I was waiting to get my teeth cleaned. I was, at the time, upset by the fact that I was forced to get up at seven o'clock in the morning on a Saturday for the purpose of going to the dentist. But my frustration soon gave away to the type of excitement that kids get when they see the presents under the Christmas tree. I saw an issue of Entertainment Weekly sitting on the table with Luke Skywalker on the cover. Already a Star Wars fan, I naturally picked up the magazine to see what the article inside was about. What I discovered was that the movies that I loved were coming back to the theaters for a special edition release that would include previously deleted scenes, as well as some new ones, and was going to be digitally enhanced. I was happy beyond understanding but became even more intoxicated with good cheer as I read on. It seemed that George Lucas always meant to go back and tell the story about how Darth Vader started out as a noble Jedi under the tutelage of a younger Obi Wan Kenobi. Not only were my favorite movies coming back to theaters, but as I was reading the article, George Lucas was writing the script for Episode 1, with two more to follow. The world was going to have three new Star Wars movies! My generation and I would have our very own Star Wars trilogy to get excited over, much as the generation before me did in 1977 with the release of A New Hope. I remember jumping up in the air in the middle of the dentist's office with a joyous grin. I remember my mother telling me to calm down, "It's only a movie." I remember when the dentist finally putting me in the chair and telling me that I was the first kid to sit in his chair with a huge grin on and happiness in my eyes. I went on to excitedly tell him, "They're making a new Star Wars!!" He was slightly disappointed about my grin not being about coming to the dentist, but became excited himself when I had relayed the news to him. I don't remember if the dentist made me feel any pain that day, and even if he did I don't think my excitement would have been diminished even if there was. But what I do remember is that he let me walk out of his office that day with that Entertainment Weekly magazine. Christmas came twice that year for my thirteen year old self, a year I would never forget.
