Where are they now? Capt. Panaka
In the Phantom Menace one of the more memorable characters was the Queen's Bodyguard, Capt. Panaka. After his heroic efforts in recapturing Theed he disappears.. in Episode II he is replaced by Capt. Typho. (Who I like) and never mentioned again..
What happened to this great character? Does he have an EU backstory of his fate? Do you think if Panaka was running security that Padme would have been running off with Jedi and getting secertly married?
So I raise my glass to Naboo's Finest, Capt. Panaka.
(back story)
Queen Amidala's loyal protector during the Trade Federation invasion crisis was Captain Panaka. Panaka was often referred to as "the quickest eyes on Naboo" for his attention to detail and selfless dedication to the safety of the Queen.
A powerfully built man, Panaka was a forceful leader, commanding a team of Royal Palace Guards and Security Troopers stationed throughout Theed. During the Trade Federation invasion, Panaka stayed close to the Queen, ensuring her protection from the Neimoidians' plans. His loyalty was such that he would openly question the strategy of Jedi Knights if he thought it would somehow endanger Amidala.

Panaka accompanied Queen Amidala during her escape from Naboo to Coruscant. When the Queen returned to Naboo to reclaim her throne, Panaka was by her side, offering cover fire during the infiltration of the Palace.

Ten years after the planet's liberation, the Naboo political structure had changed such that Panaka was no longer responsible for the protection of Amidala.
What are your thoughts on Panaka?

Though I have yet to see anything regarding Panaka's fate during the prequels, there was something in the DK book of Complete Locations I picked up the other day. In Palpatine's Lair on the Second Death Star a la Return of the Jedi there's a statue in his private office (not seen in the film) that is described as follows: "Gift from longtime ally and follower, Moff Panaka". I can only assume this is the same Panaka, implying he ended up on the good side of the New Order, probably getting governorship of the region Naboo is in.

I don't think much of Panaka, and I certainly don't think he was such a great character. But obiwan122586 is right. Panaka became a moff, or that's how I interpret it.
And I wonder if there really are 122586 people with the username obiwan...

Probably not. I just chose it, since 122586 is the numerical version of my birthdate: December 25, 1986.

And I origianlly wanted to be just plain old Blue leader, but apparently there were other Blue leaders so it added the '46'. I wonder if it's just a random number or I'm the 46th Blue leader...

Kind of ironic isn't it, being that Panaka and his nephew Typho were tasked with protecting Padme for all those years. Panaka's loyalty now presumably lies with Palpatine, the very man who is more or less responsible for Padme's death.

I agree that Panaka eventually became a Moff, but in Ep II & III my guess would be that he was still incharge of the Naboo Royal Security. Since Padme was not the queen in these episodes, he was not her bodyguard. Instead he was in charge of protecting Queens Jamilla and Apailana. And before anyone says that he wasn't protecting Jamilla in Ep II, keep in mind he probably would not have needed to be by her side at all times as Naboo was not in any direct threat at the time!

I agree with Jedi Action Figure. He was in charge of the Royal Security Force, so when Padme stopped being Queen, she was no longer under his direct protection. Instead, it fell to a su-force within the RSF to protect her.

If you regard the video game Star Wars Galaxies as canon....

Shortly after the Battle of Yavin he's still on the Naboo Security Forces and is now a Colonel.

Capt. Panaka was in fact the Royal Security captain and his primary mission was to protect the queen at all times. when padme stopped being queen, he was assigned to the next queen and Captain Typho was assigned to Padme as a Naboo Senatorial Guardian. Panaka is still alive during the clone wars because in the book Star Wars Episode III: Visual Dictionary, it says that he told Chancellor Palpatine about Padme's marriage to Anakin. but after the clone wars i dont know what happened to him.
