Luke Skywalker... Hero of the Rebellion..or Jedi Master..
Hand in Hand or Worlds Apart?

One of the Star Wars NJO Expanded Universe Novels describes Luke as not entirely loyal to the Rebellion/ New Republic.
Luke saves Princess Leia..Destroys the Death Star..Fights in the Battle of Hoth..
Then he flies off to Dagobah to find Yoda to become a Jedi. He goes to Bespin to save the Princess and his friends.. and confront Darth Vader.
He goes to Tatooine to save his friends. Goes to Dagobah for final training. Escorts his friends to Endor and confronts Darth Vader.

In the EU you see Luke pull away from his duties in the New Republic and switch gears into rebuilding the Jedi Order.
In Luke's efforts..He converts his sister, niece, and nephews and converts a dark Jedi and marrys her..has a son, who will become a Jedi..

The Jedi are the muscle of the New Republic.. The Skywalkers and Solos are divided themselves Jedi and Pilots for the New Republic...
