Attachment and the Darkside, Yoda, and the Dalai Lama,
While reading a book on the Dalai Lama. I came across a passage regarding attachment, my mind's eye went to the Anakin and Yoda Scene. Where Anakin is asking Yoda for advice..
"I think we have to make a distinction between negative desire, or attachment, and the positive quality of love that wishes another's person's happiness. Attachment is biased. It narrow our minds so that we cannot clearly see the reality of a situation, eventually bringing unnecessary problems. Like the negative emotions of anger and hatred, attachment is destructive. Wow.. Anakin all the way right.. Narrowed focus..Negative, Confused Emotions..
Yoda was right.. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to the darkside...
What do you think?

The Dalai Llama is one of the inspirations for Yoda, according to Lucas and Co.

I agree. I think Yoda should have advised Anakin with something a little more concrete than the abstraction he used. Anakin wasn't spiritually ready for that. Or at least told Anakin that when you let go of your attachment, you do not cease to love but instead love more purely and more deeply.

But good point, and excellent quote.

Or at least told Anakin that when you let go of your attachment, you do not cease to love but instead love more purely and more deeply.

That seems to be a problem with the Jedi "no love" philosophy all the way back to the KOTOR time period. They didn't seem able to distinguish between attachment and love. Or didn't trust themselves to make the distinction.

It's nice to see an example of positive connection with someone as opposed to attachment. I don't think Anakin's marriage was the cause of his downfall, but his approach to it. Your quote shows the possibility of an entirely different approach to interacting with those you love.
Thanks.

Narrow Focused...Negative, Confused Emotions....

*WOW* Totally agree! Great Blog! It reminded right away of what Obi-wan said to
Anakin in Padme's apartment in AOTC. " You're Focusing on the NEGATIVE Anakin,
Be Mindful of your Thoughts." So true this is!:D
