 | Sex and Star Wars and Beyond |
The Star Wars Saga is the most successful movie and franchise of the 20 and 21st century. (so far). Although it doesn't include sex or vulgarity.
Now with today's audience.. We have BattleStar Galactica, (Some) Star Trek, and Firefly (Serenity) all very popular shows, but geared for an adult audience.
Star Wars has tasteful scence and has sexy characters and the implication of sex..and we know there at one point had been sex.. Does it help or hurt the movie.. As the Star Wars audience matures do they want to see Star Wars have edgier and sexier scenes and characters..
Star Wars and GL are brilliant in the way you can project as much or as little "sexy" or sex into the characters or scenes as..
Star Wars broke the Hollywood molds mostly by challenging of the stereo types, gender roles, taboos, and prejudices of the 70's, 80's and 90's and 2000's.. Where are the sexual boundaries? Do Star Wars need to go there? Do audiences want sex or more sexy in Star Wars?
Although, if you include love triangles, incest, feminine droids (c3p0) and wookie loving..SW was ahead of its time..
Does Star Wars (TV) or SW books need more sex elements? I mean the implications of sex are there.. But will we see it on screen or in print?
What exactly does Ben do on Tatooine for 20 years?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
CE

There's plenty of implied sex in Star Wars, and more would just be gratuitous. I mean, you can't get a whole lot steamier than some of Anakin and Padme's scenes as it is! And that black leather number Padme wears by the fireplace on Naboo...LOOK OUT...
I'd like to think that Star Wars fans are intelligent and thoughtful enough to fill in the blanks on our own! I neither need, nor want...more...
Good entry, RojoTrooper!

WHAT? DID YOU SAY "SEX"? WOO-HOO!! My kinda Entry right here...
Yes, as you pointed out *bluntly* there are plenty of hints to sexual incounters in the SW saga in the OT and PT. Mostly known through Padme's pregnancy! I mean come on! Obviously, there was *dancing in the sheets* ( thanks MO2YP ) going on. Luke and Leia ...um...Kissing? There's the incest twist, might I add *twins*! WoW not bad for the early 80's.... With the PT the *love* scenes got *hotter*, There was..ahem...actual swaping tongues and spit in the kisses between Anakin and Padme!!! Leia's and Han's were more the *classic* styles of the black and white movie era. (cont. DARN LIMITS ![]:)](http://blogs.starwars.com/share/img/emoticons/devil.gif) )

I don't think sex is essential in any story. I think many people are just obsessed and make mindless films they call entertainment.

Like Ami says, about SW fans being intelligent enough to fill in the blanks. I agree, although as you pointed out times are changing. I would have to say YES to them getting a little more edgey with the *sex* issue. If the daily *SOAPS* can do it! So can the SW!!

Yes, exactly! Though you don't see, you have to assume there was sex or else there would be nobody in the galaxy. Except for 'Space God' or 'Space Adam and Eve'.
Personally, I think there shouldn't be much more sex implied or shown in SW. But everybody must learn sometime. Though, in Star Wars, it might be different. Birds and Bees, what else can I say?

I'm split on this...
I can't imagine why they would put it in Star Wars, but then again, it is actually a part of real life. (for most, anyway )
Look at the new BSG. They do deal with not just sex, but relationship that are lustful. They don't have to show the sex, but it's completely unreasonable to skip it entirely. Many of the situations where it comes up, it does just that: it just happens, isn't planned, and is therefore harder to show as being "off-screen."
If it's done and handled in an adult manner, I wouldn't care if they have it in the SW series. I guess it comes down to exactly what Rick McCallum meant when he said it will be "darker" than the films....

b]SEX.........YOU RANG. I prefer certain things left to my imagination. My grandpadawans ask a lot of questions and how many times can I send them to get me water while an edgy scene passes. I would like my grandkids to be able to watch some of SW tv so I don't believe it's needed in but like VA2 states "times are changing".

WHAT? DID YOU SAY "SEX"? WOO-HOO!!
That made me laugh so hard I'm crying.
*wipes eyes* Let's see if I can answer this blog without saying something sarcastic and stupid...
No, I don't think Star Wars needs blatant and/or suggestive portrayals of sexuality in their films. I mean, beyond lusty dancers, impassioned kissing, and *implied* sex, why do they need to go any further? What's the point? It's fine where it is. One of the reasons I love Star Wars so much is because it's one of the few clean sci-fi flicks out there (that's actually popular).

Sex in Star Trek? I'll have to start watching!
The PT got a little *sexy*, but not graphically so. I highly doubt the live action TV show will get down and dirty. Certainly not the 3D animated show.

They can satisfy that audience, and provide the realism of romance and amourousness (I'm not sure if that's a word), by keeping it just that...romance. I really don't need to see Han and Leia go at it on a sabaac table, thank you. The implication is more than enough.
If the daily *SOAPS* can do it! So can the SW!!
Look, I'm sorry, but the day that Star Wars turns into a science-fiction soap opera is the day I throw in the fanboy towel. There's enough sex on T.V. as it is, with more and more shows to contribute every day. If people wanna see sex, they can watch those shows. Star Wars doesn't need to join the mass of contributors to sexuality in the media.

I'm sorry, I just don't see the point. Why fix something that isn't broken? Star Wars is doing fine as it is. I'm satisfied with speeders blowing up, blasters going off, big lightsaber battles over lava-pits. I may be a guy, but even I don't want to see sex in every single movie, T.V. show, and action flick ever made. Star Wars needs to stick to where it is. They've been doing a good job so far, and I'd hate to see it stop.

I can't see Lucas letting sexual content penetrate (if I can use that word) the TV series. Plus, I see your point, but I don't think a Star Wars show needs to chase any more viewers than it will inherently garner. Personally though, I'm hoping for a late night special...

Does Star Wars (TV) or SW books need more sex elements?
Well, I feel sorry for people out there who think that in order for a movie or TV show to be good, that it must have sex in it or have a sexy twist. Star Wars would be ruined for me if they decided to go in this direction.. it just wouldn't be the same. But who knows? In society today, it may fail if sex isn't presented in some way.
Interesting blog..

"IN SOCIETY TODAY, IF MAY FAIL IF *SEX* ISN'T PRESENTED IN SOME WAY. "
My words before seem to have been miscontrude. All I was implying is that 2006 TV series have changed from the earlier TV shows from the 80's, 90's. I honestly don't think graphic *Sexual content* is needed or even just for SW. But I personally wouldn't mind seeing more of the *romance*. That is what got *me* hooked the 2nd time around with the PT ( OK, HAYDEN had ALOT to do with it too ). I'm not saying making it R or even adult rated, just play a little catch up with the times. Remember, those who know *ME* I have 3 younglings myself who enjoy SW to.

Boy grows up as a slave, become a legendary warrior, marries a girl he met 10 years earlier, gets sliced and roasted by his best friend BUT doesn't die....
Girl marries boy who used to be a slave, becomes a senator, appears to die at least once (but is ok), gets pregnant and NO ONE KNOWS, gets strangled but AGAIN doesn't die, has TWINS that NO ONE saw coming, then dies for no reason....

Twins grow up without knowing each other, meet up nearly 20 years later and fall for each other before they find out that their twins. Not only that, but their dad is the little slave boy who has attempted (an occasionally suceeded) to capture, toture, and/or kill them.

How much more of a soap opera do ya want?
Ha! I want Darth Maul to walk into a scene in Episode 3:
Obi-Wan - "But...I chopped you in half and you fell into a bottomless pit!? How could you possibly have survived?"
Maul - "There's a logical and highly satisfying explanation behind that, which I will reveal on my death bed, along with several other shocking revelations."
Obi-Wan - "Well, why did you come back now?"
Maul - "I have important news for you...you are Yoda's illegitimate love-child. I'm so sorry."
Obi-Wan - " "

Well, I wasn't really pointing fingers at any one person's comment. And I understand what you mean. Star Wars could stand a little more romance (for us girls, anyway ). From what I heard, the new TV series is supposed to be 'darker'.. whatever that means. But I don't think it'll be intentionally for younger audiences, as the Star Wars films were.
OK, HAYDEN had ALOT to do with it too
Yeah, I'll admit to the same!

Yes, but it balances out by people getting burned alive, big wars, stuff blowing up, battles, dramatic lightsaber fights, people dying, etc... It's more of an opera (minus the lousy sets and high-pitched singing) than a soap opera.

Thanks for the comments!
Star Wars Saga is a Love Story.. I enjoy the tasteful implication of sex..Who doesn't love Padme and her many outfits. AOTC is full of implication. The love the sweetheart playful banter between Han and Leia in ESB.. "I know"..
Will we leave sex to the Boba Fett and the Sith and the Senate?
Or will we see lots of guys fighting in form fitting body armor and their lightsabers?
I love to romance and sex in a tasteful way.. I don't want the "sex" to take over the story..
Is Ben starting a New Jedi Order/ New Hope of his own on Tattoine with the ladies of Mos Eisley Spaceport?
Thanks,
