Spirit Obi Wan Kenobi
I was watching ESB and ROTJ over the Easter holiday.
In ESB and ROTJ Obi Wan Kenobi appears to Luke as a Force Spirit/Ghost to guide him.
Now my thoughts would be this is Luke's conscience guiding him with the Living Force and not Ben coming back to mentor Luke.
Why then would Luke need to travel to Dagobah to find Yoda to complete his training if he had "Spirit Ben" there to mentor/guide him.
Just as "Darth Vader" appears to Luke in the Dagobah cave..is this Luke's conscience telling him something about his past, present, and future..that Ben wouldn't tell him or a failed Jedi Trial..
Even as a Ghost, Ben doesn't tell Luke the truth about his father.. Luke's conscience or visions force him to confront Darth Vader to find out the truth for himself.
So is Ben a genuine Force Spirit? or is he a creation of Luke's conscience. Ultimately Luke goes with his "gut" or conscience and doesn't follow the Jedi advice of Ben or Yoda to confront Darth Vader.
Just a Ben appears again in ROTJ. Ben 's ghost appears again to Luke to reason through all the truths he has been given.. from Uncle Owen, Aunt Beru, Obi Wan Kenobi, and his own father Darth Vader.
Luke never really tells anyone... Hey, Ben/ghost told me to Dagobah to train as a Jedi.. They would have thought he was crazy..

What do you guys think? Just a thought..

See you guys and gals at c4 and ce:)

THX,
Chris

I'm pretty sure he's really a Force ghost or whatever the official term is. Or it could be the 'shrooms that Luke took that one time on the Death Star. Not sure which...

Luke never really tells anyone...
Its something that I've never wanted to confront directly - that of Ben being 'not really there'. I'm not sure why. I think inherently we all want to believe in an after-life, a place where our loved ones go and who can at times guide us in times of need. Having said that, I definitely believe there is something to your thoughts. Perhaps what Luke sees isn't a ghost, a spirit, or a dead guy: He is seeing himself in a more idealized form and something he is far more comfortable with confronting and questioning. After all, talking to yourself is crazy, talking to a ghost...that's something else.

Compelling blog!

I would have to venture a guess that Ben is a Force ghost that can mentor Luke, but he needed guidance in the physical world from Yoda ... who was the last remaining Jedi of the Old Republic to boot. As we learn in the PT, it is a power that is achievable, to come back from the netherworld of the Force

Indeed, but we never see Qui-Gon! Why? Could it be that the power Yoda is learning is something that has to do with tapping 'internal' power and not external via a ghost? Of course, Luke would have no way of learning this power prior to Ben's death but......perhaps because he is the son of someone conceived by the Force, he has the power inherently. Again, I think the idea has some merit.

Good point K-fan. I had read (I think in a SW Insider issue) that Qui-Gon had not fully mastered the power to come back in full "ghostly" form as Yoda and Ben had. He did not have the time to prepare or learn that skill before being killed by Darth Maul (somewhat prematurely) ... so he only found his voice in the Force. Not sure if that's right or wrong, but it's one theory. And also, something I may blog on, how did Anakin learn to become a Force ghost? He had no teachings in it from Qui-Gon or Yoda (perhaps Palpatine had instructed him?) ... perhaps that he was directly related to the Force he had this power also? just a thought ...

Great responses..
Can you imagine Luke saying "I see dead Jedi" and this little green guy is teaching me the ways of the Jedi to the Leaders of the Rebellion.. They may think Luke is smokin weed with the Chewy but they keep him around because he is good as a fighter..
Does anyone say Where's Luke? When Luke goes to confront Vader and winds up on the Death Star and noone in the Rebellion question it or his bloodline?

Maybe Luke is imagining he is seeing 3 Ghosts at the end of ROTJ..
Noone else really sees them.. Luke never says "Hey, Does anyone else see those lumious beings? Hey, is there anymore of this Ewok wine."

Can I have some Ewok wine? :^O...I wanna see lumious beings too. :D

Anyway, I think Kfan hit the topic DED on. That being said, I think Obi Wan was acting more of a guide to Luke. Helping him find his way to Yoda and to the Force. ;)

If I had a conscience, I'd be mighty perturbed if a puppet started talking to it.

Maybe RJ was onto something with those shrooms... ;)

Staying in swamp alone for 20 plus years talking to frogs does things to your mind..

I agree that while Ben was a ghost guiding him, that Luke still needed physical help to master the force. I also think (as stated) that Ben was a Force ghost, as I don't think some random impulse told him to go to Dagobah. Also, about never seeing Qui-gon's ghost, anyone who has read Heir to the Empire knows that Ben's ghost dissipates into the Force at the beginning of the book, which takes place 11 years after he died.

Basically, at the time of the rise of the Empire, Qui-Gon's ghost was 13 years old, which is definitely resilient, but his ghost should be long gone by the time Luke leaves Tatooine in Episode IV and becomes aware of his destiny.
