"Plug in. He should be able to interpret the entire Imperial network."
That's what Obi-Wan said on the Death Star. I've always wondered how R2-D2 would have such capabilities, as decoding schematics and other top secret info doesn't really seem like it would fall within the usual requirements of an astromech. Why did Obi-Wan know or assume R2-D2 could traverse the computers of the Empire's most powerful superweapon? Is it because Obi-Wan remembers some of the upgrades Anakin had modified into him? Or is it simply because Leia fed him the new "codecs" or whatever to be able to read through such material.

What do you think?

this is completely unrelated but i have been having a hard time finding a timeline that will allow me to find and read the books that are between the movies.

i just read dark lord - the rise of darth vador and i thought it was the book meant to pick up after revenge of the sith. (maybe it is, but i read something that said other wise)

i would really like to be able to fill in all the missing books before i venture out into the expanded universe or any other spin offs.
please help thanks in advance ~ d

I wondered when someone would figure that out.

To answer the bloggers question: It could be a bit of both. Remember, R2-D2's memory was never altered, as See Threepio's was. It's possible that since the Republic became the Empire that they used many of the same codes, etc. as they had in the past (they figured very few people would attempt to work against the Empire). Furthermore, R2 wasn't just any droid, but he belonged to a Senator of the Republic.

OR it could be that plans to the Death Star Princess Leia had given R2-D2 was so thorough as to include getting into the computers.

At any rate, we now know "Old Ben" wasn't just a desert hermit and that the Jedi were pretty technologically savvy.

Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

Of course, R2 could have tried . . . and failed. ;) (unlikely, of course. Did R2 ever fail at anything?!!! ;))

All I can do is echo Fan4Yrs' explanation. He put it quite well! :D

Wow, that really is off topic. But I'm still glad to help. I'd recommend Wikipedia for the task, though the publisher Random House also keeps a less updated list.

Enjoy reading!

Great input FAN4YRS! Thanks for the comment. I hadn't considered R2's role as a Senatorial aide, nor had I thought about Leia's plans being so complete.

The info they wanted wasn't top secret and they were accessing it from inside the DS. Obi-Wan could see there was a droid interface and so he assumed R2 would be able to call up the relevant data, ie where Leia and the tractor beam controls were. That type of info may have been available to anyone on board.

... or if not for everyone, at least the people in a command capacity such as that control room. Good point, Captain, thanks.
