Delving into Droids pt. 2
Welcome back! For those of you that missed the first part of this entry and are interested, click here to read it. In that entry, I covered why C3PO's memory was wiped but not R2's, hopefully to an extent that will satisfy most fans.

Well, let's proceed. The list of questions that I would still like to cover in this series are as follows:

-Why would the Jedi desire for R2 to keep his memory, and why would they desire the information he held to remain a secret?
-Why don't Yoda or Obi-Wan seem to recognize the droids in the OT?
-Why does R2 claim that Obi-Wan owned him and not recognize Yoda at all?
-What happened to the droids between ROTS and ANH?
-Where did R2's anti-grav boosters go?

So let's jump right into it. What exactly were the Jedi's intentions with the droids and why did they want it that way?

As I stated in my last entry, R2 was probably desirable to them as a historical record as well as a "person" genuinely interested in the twins safety. With him knowing the past, he also knew who Leia's potential enemies were and could watch out for her as she grew up on Alderaan, reporting to Bail Organa if he felt that anything was amiss. Obviously, his secrecy was very important- if anyone found out who Luke or Leia truly were it could cause the emperor to hunt them down and insure that they were destroyed or converted and trained in the dark side.

So why the secrecy from the twins? I believe the Jedi thought of two things that effected this decision. The first, was that if either Luke or Leia learned who Vader truly was and the tragic past that led to his existence, there would be a chance that they would try to save him and get themselves killed before they had a chance to really impact the galaxy in a positive way. The second is that the Jedi had learned their lesson in trying to control the force and had thus become servants of it once again. This means that they probably would have been much more inclined to let the will of the force take over and let it lead the twins to them when it was ready- which, by the way, is exactly what happened. So in the meantime, they learned from Qui-Gonn and the Shaman of the Whills (for more on him, read this entry.)

So what was the Jedi's actual plan? I believe it was to let the will of the force guide them and to keep Luke and Leia safe and hidden just in case the force wanted to use them. They wanted to position themselves to help the twins, and thus learned to be immortal from Qui-Gonn. But this entry isn't really about that, so let's get back to the droids. Why didn't the Jedi split them up? Why didn't they erase both of their memories and put them back to serving their original purposes?

I believe they kept them around for that history I have spoken about and so that eventually Luke and Leia might find out the truth. I think they sent them both with Leia so that R2 could continue recording his history, protect her, and feel comfortable working with 3PO. I think it was natural to send both droids to Alderann simply because Vader had a closer link with the Lars and might have noticed them if either had been sent with Luke.

And did the Jedi put the lock on R2's memory so that he couldn't tell certain people? It's completely possible, but until Lucas says so through the EU, or upcoming TV series, we'll never know for sure.

Hopefully that is enough to satisfy everyone on why only one droid's memory was erased and what exactly the intentions of Yoda and Obi-wan were. If not, ask a question in the comments and i'll try to answer it. So moving on...

Our next question is why don't Obi-Wan or Yoda seem to recognize the droids in the OT?

Many theories state that there were just too many of these types of droids in the galaxy. Why would these two recognize one astromech and one protocol droid as being the same ones from a situation that happened over a decade before? Yoda had barely any involvement with R2 or C3PO in the first place, and to Obi-wan the droids were merely that- droids. Neither Obi-Wan or Yoda had ever had any kind of deep involvement with these the droids. So to me, that theory is highly possible.

...And unfortunately, that's where I'm going to leave it for tonight. I'll continue with more on why no one recognized the droids and all of the other questions/problems tomorrow night! See you all there!
