Words of Yoda
ENTRY 82: March 23, 2007

So this hit me on the road today. We are all familiar with Yoda's words to Luke in ROTJ:

LUKE
Then I am a Jedi?

YODA (shakes his head)
Ohhh. Not yet. One thing remains: Vader. You
must confront Vader. Then, only then, a Jedi
will you be. And confront him you will.

We know when and where Yoda said these words to Luke in reference to facing his father.

But, when you truly look at this phrase, perhaps it could also be put toward Anakin himself. Anakin turned from his true self and became Darth Vader. If Anakin was ever to emerge he would have to face and conquer Vader.

Luke could sense the struggle going on inside of Vader and tried to reach out to Anakin...

LUKE
I've accepted the truth that you were once
Anakin Skywalker, my father.

VADER (turning to face him)
That name no longer has any meaning for me.

LUKE
It is the name of your true self. You've only
forgotten. I know there is good in you. The
Emperor hasn't driven it from you fully. That
is why you couldn't destroy me. That's why
you won't bring me to your Emperor now.

and show him the way out.

LUKE
Search your feelings, father. You can't do
this. I feel the conflict within you. Let go
of your hate.

The dominant Vader was able to maintain control over the submissive and caring Anakin, until the Emperor was destroying his son. As Luke pleaded for help and continually used the term "Father" in his cries, it finally reached Anakin at a level that Vader could no longer control. He had to let go of his hate and confront himself, as Vader and Anakin. Overpowering Vader, Anakin rose to the task at hand. He faced Vader, saved his son, destroyed the Emperor and saved the galaxy.

.....Then, only then, a Jedi will you be. And confront him you will.

At this point Anakin HAS truly become a Jedi and can take his place among the spirits (whichever version you like)

ya know thats the first time Ive seen it explained that way and it makes sense, especially if one looks at Vader, as most did (including Obi Wan) as a seperate entity from Anakin, much the way those with multiple personality disorders can be two distinctly different personalities within the same body.

One was dominant, until the other rose up and asserted back control.

maybe all Anakin needed was a good head shrink LOL...

good blog.

I love that scene on Endor now. It has so many more layers of meaning after the OT.

I agree ... I blogged a similar entry about how Anakin never truly became Vader here if you would like to read it. Good post, and helps define Anakin's character. He really was a confused soul ... right up to the end.

Very interesting. I suppose Anakin did confront Vader in that way. Like DJ Maul said, you've explained this thought in a clear way that makes sense. Great blog, dude.

WILD reading of the scene... I like it a lot!
And with the way Yoda speaks, who knows what he could have meant? ;)
