Star Wars fans as teachers
My daughter (sophomore in high school) came home this week thrilled as her Astronomy assignment was to be about aliens. It is a project that is meant to be fun as the school year draws to a close.

It just so happens, her teacher is a HUGE Star Wars fan.

Her presentation is going to be about several aliens from Star Wars and the planets from which they originate. It was great to see her putting together a powerpoint show centering around our galaxy far far away.

She was going to go into the games and find the worlds that way but then I told her she should look through my Star Wars Encyclopedia and to certainly use the starwars.com databank. I hope she does well with this. She took the time to make it nice and to hit on facts that people overlook, such as the fact that Ewoks are not just cute furry critters. They were going to eat Han in honor of C3-PO. Just guessing the soldiers that had been wearing those Stormtrooper helmets they are banging on in the celebration did not go to waste. They are omnivorous little beings.

She also had a very good teacher n the 5th grade that loved Star Wars. I remember he took all the students that wanted to go see TPM one day after school....and he flipped the bill for the tickets. He was a strong influence on her and she still talks about him. He'll be one of those teachers that she'll talk about as an adult and how great he was. Those are the ones that stick with you and you know they cared about what they did and about all the students.

With 2 padawans who are into SW big time - just like their parents! :) - it always is fun when they can work our beloved saga into their assignments. The oldest even continues to in college. It pleases me to no end. :)

As a (sub) teacher, I make my affinity for SW clear right from the onset (I carry a SW mug and lunchbox and mags w/me! :)), and it's hard to conduct class when the students know what a big fan I am. :) (so sad are we when we must get down to business.)

One of my youngest (high school) pad's teachers carries around a DV deep breathing toy he activates from time to time. It's a riot! During parent/teacher conf time, all we could do was talk about SW. Oh well. ;)

There are plenty of us out there, toiling away. I teach physics, to seniors that can be too cool for Star Wars, but occasionally find a fan. Trust me, it is just as rewarding for a teacher to find a devoted fanboy/girl as it is when the student finds the teacher to be a fan.

One of my favorite pastimes while teaching is to work one super obscure SW reference in to each class, and then wait to see if just one kid can pick up on it. Astronomy tests about the planetary motions of Ithor and Yavin are always good for this.

There's a lot of us about.
It was through Star Wars that I totally turned around the output of creative writing from my 5th graders. :)

That is just awesome, Slow! You're so right in that teacher will be a strong part of her memory forever.

I work SW into my classes as well, although I conduct training classes for a bank! :^O

Last weekend when I was in costume, two boys of about 12 were peppering me with questions, and then they decided, "Just wait until our science teacher hears we met a Jedi...." and they laughed. It was a fun moment, and then I thought it was nice they'd have something to talk about with their teacher when they told him about all the SW people they saw....

My teachers practically shun Star Wars. It's miserable. The only time I ever get it into school is during english one time when we were talking about the hero cycle. Even then it was "does anyone know any books or movies with the hero cycle in them"

They're cannibals I tells ya!

Very cool that the teacher likes Star Wars.

Awesome! I'm trying to figure out the Drake Equation for the Star Wars Galaxy.

I have only had one teacher who is a big Star Wars fan and that was in 6th grade. But in 6th grade I was too shy to talk to him about it. Alas.

He'll be one of those teachers that she'll talk about as an adult and how great he was. Those are the ones that stick with you and you know they cared about what they did and about all the students.
There are a few teachers who stick with me like that and it's always so nice thinking back about how they touched your life.

Aaaawwwweeeesssssoooommmmeeee!!!!! :D If I was her teacher, I'd give her an automatic "A"!!! It's really nice when you can actually have fun doing a school project, and Star Wars makes it all the better! Every chance I get, I try to work Star Wars into my essays.... :D

Those are the ones that stick with you and you know they cared about what they did and about all the students.
Well, I've never had a Star Wars fan for a teacher, but I've certainly had a teacher or two like this! :)
