Some of you know that I am from Texas (yee-haw!). I live in North Texas about seventy miles east of Dallas. That's just far enough away where the traffic is decent but at the same time it's not too far to drive to see the Texas Rangers, Cowboys or Mavericks play! Besides being a huge Star Wars fan I am also a big
Supercross fan! Well, my fiance' being the sweetheart that he is, heard that the AMA Supercross series was going to be held on April 22 at
Texas Stadium (where the Dallas Cowboys play) and to surprise me he bought tickets for the two of us!
The show started at 7PM so we decided to leave around 3:30 so we could stop and get something to eat and make sure to beat the traffic (Ha!). Whoever picked the spot to build Texas Stadium did a horrible job. It resides in the middle of three major highways which makes traffic worse! After spending about 45 minutes parking we were able to work our way into the stadium. We found our seat and got settled around 6PM, one hour to showtime. As we waited for the first heat, the Supercross announcer was interviewing some to the riders' pit crew and mechanics.
Then, the time comes to introduce the top 10 250cc riders. Each rider rode out of a tunnel into a cloud of smoke and fireworks and rode wheelies and such. One of the top three riders, # 22 Chad Reed, rode out with a # 8 Troy Aikman Cowboys jersey on over his, and needless to say, the crowd went crazy. Aikman is always a favorite in Dallas (although I prefer Emmitt Smith!). After this, the first 125cc heat began. In each class (125 and 250) there are two heat races with qualifying races and semi-qualifying races. After those were finished there was a single race with 7-8 year olds on KTM 50ccs. They were absolutely adorable! The winner of this event was an eight-year old name Ricky White who rode as #11. I don't have kids but I do have small cousins about that age, and can't imagine them racing a dirtbike! I have one and I have been burnt, bumped, and bruised, so I know how dangerous they can be.
Now, onto the MAIN EVENT! It's now time to begin the final race in the 250's! The three top riders are close in points so each one needs to walk away with a win. The # 4 Ricky Charmichael is the defending Supercross champion and is ahead of # 22 Chad Reed and #7 James "Bubba" Stewart in points. The race begins and Charmichael gets the whole-shot (first person to reach the first turn). He leads the race followed closely b Stewart and Reed until he crashes! The crash bumps him back to 9th place and allows Stewart to lead for 5 laps until he crashes! He drops back to 5th place. Reed finishes the race in first place with Stewart in second and Charmichael in 6th. This makes me pretty happy because I have never cared for Charmichael since 2001 when he stole the championship from 7-time Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath. McGrath has been respectfully dubbed the Supercross King and he's been my favorite since he dominated the 125's. McGrath retired in 2003 but now travels to most of the races to sign autographs for fans in the pits before the race. He was in the pits signing last night but it cost $30 for ONE person to go to the pits so I didn't meet him.
We had a great time and I got a Jeremy McGrath T-Shirt (that I am now wearing) although I'm a little out of touch with the riders because now I am obsessed with Star Wars! Oh well, I can still be a fan of both right?
