Memories. They can be pure joy, terror, or sadness. Whatever the case may be, human brains have the ability to withhold tons of memories and can readily retrieve any one of them in an instant. May is a very important month to many of us Star Wars fans, and most of us have fond memories that occured in this month. This blog entry is going to be a personal recolection of May, 2002.
It all started Thursday morning of May the second. I was sixteen and driving a cherry red, 2000 Dodge Ram 1500. It was my very first vehicle and I contibuted at least half of my hard earned babysitting money to buy it (my dad covered the rest). I had only been driving since February and because of where we live, my mom always liked to follow me to school. She didn't mind since she drove my little sister to school anyway.
This morning it would be different, however. My sister, Ryleigh, had to be at school early for a student council meeting, so I was on my own. To drive to school from where we live, I had to cross SH 276, which, at the time, had the reputation of being the deadliest state highway in Texas. Most of the information from the accident is second-hand because I do not have the memory of it. Funny thing that brain, it also has the ability to block out certain memories that may be unpleasant, or remind of us pain. Anyways, this is what happened. I stopped at the stop sign at SH 276, looked both ways and started across. Out of nowhere, and traveling 10 mph over the speed limit, came this dark blue SINGLE cab pick-up truck with 17 people in it! They T-boned me on the driver's side, causing me to bust out the window with my head, and rendering me unconscious.
Their was a lady and her two kids behind me, and a school bus full of kids behind her, and neither one of them saw the truck either. The lady in the car behind me got into my truck with me and tried to keep me awake until the paramedics and police got there. When they arrived, 16 of the 17 people crammed into the other vehicle, took off running for a nearby field (they were illegal immigrants). The paramedics who were there said that I was combative and that that was a sign of major head trauma so they decided to take me by Care-Flight helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas(the same one Kennedy was taken to when he was shot).
This is where most of my memory comes back. I woke up in the emergency room with my softball coaches talking to me. I remember asking them what they were doing in my bedroom. Then, I guess I blacked out again because the next thing I remember is waking up in a hospital bed with my family all around me. I can remember going through the TV channels and finding that Return of the Jedi was just starting! I was so excited! What a fun way to end one horrible day? Unfortunately, I didn't make it through the opeing crawl before I was out again.
I wasn't really a fan then but I had seen each one at least once. While in the hospital I got alot of get well gifts and one of them was a Teen People magazine with two of the years hottest movie couples! Can you guess which ones? That's right it was Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman. I didn't actually know who they were so I didn't pay that much attention to the magazine.
Two weeks later (May 16) I had a follow-up appointment at the hospital to make sure everything was okay. It took forever to finally see the doctor and when we were finished it was too late to go to school. On the way back my dad and I stopped at Subway to get some lunch. This Subway was right next to a movie theater and we walked over to see what was playing. My dad wanted to treat me to a movie and suggested that we see Attack of the Clones. I wasn't sure what that was but I said "sure" anyway.
I ended up loving the movie and have been a Star Wars fan ever since.
