The time is soon coming that my hyperspace subscription will run out and I will be forced to decide whether or not to renew it. I probably will, given the blog feature and the "What's the Story?" opportunities. But, here are a few things that could turn "probably" into "for shizzle."
Online Sabaac -- I can entertain myself for long, boring hours on poker sites gambling away fake money, but if it was Star Wars, I'd be beaming with euphoric joy! I've always wanted to know how to play sabaac, and despite all the research I've done, I still can't put together a full 72 card deck. Help me out here Hypersapce! It'd be a great way to reward your members, and for us to get to know each other better, by wagering thousands of fake credits!
Online Dejarik -- Similar to the above, I love strategy games, and the classic strategy game is chess. Playing chess online is wonderful, but how much better would it be with a Star Wars twist. Who doesn't want to let the Wookiee win? Watching Chewbacca and C-3PO play dejarik in
A New Hope and reading descriptions of some cool dejarik moves really makes me wish I could learn this game, and I'm sure there are many out there who agree. Again, it'd be a great way to bring the fan community together.
Return of the HoloNet News -- I remember before Episode II, starwars.com ran a sort of Star Wars newspaper called the HoloNet News. I think it was published in
Star Wars Insider for a while, but I haven't seen any traces of it recently. This publication gave the fan a great view of what it would be like to live in the Galaxy Far, Far Away with sports articles, political columns, and many other things that tied into the story we see in the books and movies. It could be set in the time directly after Episode III, and take us step by step into the Galactic Civil War. There is a lot of uncharted space on the timeline there that could be explained beautifully through the eyes of newswriters from the Star Wars galaxy. A weekly publication would be great.
Fan Fiction contests -- We're already half-way there with the weekly "What's the Story?" feature, but it'd be a great reward to let the talented fans contribue even more to the galaxy. There are a lot of talented writers out there with little outlet for their Star Wars stories. It could be an anual, bi-anual, quarterly, even monthly competition. The continuity gurus like Pablo Hidalgo and others could make sure there are no infringements and edit the stories as needed, and the fans could have a rewarding impact on the official continuity. This wish is probably the least realistic, but a writer can dream, can't he?
Rumor Reports -- This is essential with the Expanded Universe continuing to explore the galaxy. Hyperspace did okay with Episode III spoilers, but with the TV shows forthcoming, and the continuation of the books and comics and video, there is a lot a fan needs to know, and those of us who pay shouldn't have to scour the internet for the slightest rumor scraps. Members should have an accessible place with reliable release dates, summaries, and spoilers for the future of the galaxy. It should come straight from LucasArts and LucasBooks and all those other LucasCompanies. Reward the fans by making their fandom a bit easier. We are paying for it after all.
Hyperspace aparel -- It'd be nice to be able to wear an exclusive T-shirt or hat or chain that declared your geekdom. How about some Star Wars bling bling? Make it available in the online store at decent prices because I'm already broke before the subscription. Exclusive designs would be quite rewarding to the average fan, and it's a wonderful source of revenue for LucasClothing.
There it is people! Tell me what you think! Post your wishes and needs for the fill of your fandom. May the Force be with us as we press on in this beautiful thing called fandom!
