 | Star Wars: The Rise to Revenge (Part One) |
Well, we all knew it was a matter of time before the blogtroopers caught me. So, here's the link to my screenplay
I'm going to say this once, and then I'll give it a rest. What is the point of paying money for a blog that restricts creative freedom? I mean, come on, is anybody really going to read someone's story and go, "Eureka! I must steal this and claim it as my own!" Besides, if I read the guidelines correctly, everything that is published on here becomes property of Lucasfilm anyway, so how can anyone sue and get away with it?
Don't mind me, I'm just a little peeved. I hope you enjoy the story

Ideas are a strange thing, especially in entertainment law... even if they're not stolen, somebody can make a case that they were. So the rules, as I understand them, pretty much enforce a standard legal cover-your-butt policy. Better to be strict than to risk a lawsuit, however frivolous.

I think this is also a case of "better safe than sorry," because ideas can be proven to have had prior ownership, etc.
What I don't understand is why some writing is considered fanfic, while other stuff isn't...

Yeah, I get that. I was upset at the time, and felt the need to rant
But, you know, even if my stuff is published elsewhere, and Lucasfilm creates a project very similar to mine, I can still sue and very likely win, so in the end, does it really matter?

Maybe it's only fanfic when written in third person

As I understand it, a lawsuit's likelyhood of success depends greatly on plausability. If you're penpals with someone who then steals your ideas and makes money off 'em, you'd have to provide proof of the correspondence in order to sue. Likewise, if your fanfic is on another site, LFL could easily say that they knew nothing of it. But that's a tough claim to make if it's on their site, where their employees are known to hang out.

Or... maybe... that journal is all real!

That does bring up an interesting point...What if someone wrote a fiction story like R2R but told it like it was a personal anecdote? Where do the lines blur?
Just a hypothetical. I know it won't be me that does it. This screenplay will probably be my only foray into the world of fanfic anyway.

Being married to a lawyer, who at one point did some copyright work, all I can say is it's thick, and there are a ton of issues the everyday person is not aware. I totally understand your frustration, but look on the bright side - you have a huge audience here to expose to your fan-fic even if you have to post it elsewhere.

Yeah, it's a weird thing having to post stuff on a different site...but it didn't keep me from enjoying the first part of your screenplay!

You're absolutely right. I was being a little childish on the issue.

Thanks. We're just getting started!
