Like Father, Like Son
Everyone has heard the old saying "Like father, like son." A son will often inherit certain traits of his father's, or simply pick up on them by seeing the father do them so often. How true is this statement? Is the son really like his father....

Night has fallen on Coruscant. In the Supreme Chancellor's office the window has been shattered. The Chancellor finds himself on the floor. A purple blade is at his throat. Palpatine says words to the Chosen One, who stands beside him. He mutters for help; convinces the young Jedi to come to his aid. The Chancellor knows that if the boy does, he will fall into Darkness.

The Chosen One ignites his blade.

Like father, like son.

The Battle over Endor rages on. Within the Death Star, three beings watch the fight. The son of the Chosen One stares out the window, watching death. Death of his friends. The Emperor whispers words of encouragement. He wants the son to take up his sword. The Emperor knows that if the son does, he will fall into Darkness.

The Son ignites his blade.

Like father, like son.

Somewhere on the IV moon of Yavin, The Chosen One duels with a woman sent to kill him. He does not have to- he chooses to. They move through the jungle, lightsabers moving in a blur. Anakin forces the Dark-Jedi back into a temple. He follows, into the darkness. The woman cannot be seen.

Like father, like son.

On the Death Star, Luke fights his father with fury. He does not have to- he chooses to. He moves his father into a darker area, and follows. He cannot see his father, but he hears his voice. Provoking him to attack.

Like father, like son.

Inside the temple, the woman attacks Anakin in the dark. She believes she can win. She is mistaken. Their battle leads them to the top of the temple. The woman makes a quick move- The Chosen One's lightsaber falls. He quickly finds a replacement. His anger takes hold of him, and he attacks with power. The woman falls to the ground, but Anakin does not stop. He pounds his blade against hers, with an unstoppable fury. The cliff breaks. The woman falls. Anakin lets out a vicious yell.

At the Death Star, Vader attacks the son from the darkness. The son falls. Not physically. He slips into the Darkness, hitting his father with hatred. Vader is forced onto the ground; he is losing. With a brutal hit by his son's blade, Vader's hand is gone. Luke moves for the kill, but stops. He shakes off the Darkside. He does not kill his Father.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This shows the extreme difference between Anakin and Luke. Though many of the same events happened to them, they both made a crucial decision in the end. The father fell into the Dark, and could not stop it. The son fell into the Dark, and decided to climb back out. In no way does "Like father, like son" apply here.

Just because two people do some of the same things, does not mean that they are alike. In the end, it is the choices of the people that make them similar. Anakin makes a choice to go to the Darkside, and stay there. Luke makes a choice to go to the Darkside, and leave quickly. This is such an important difference and it shows a person's true character.

Like father, like son, is just a saying. Sometime in their lives, one of the two will make a different choice.

Until next time,

~Merryman~
