Hey, everybody. I was just thinking about Yoda, and the way he talks. Instead of our usual basically, Subject-Verb-Object, his is Verb-Object-Subject most of the time. this is not true all of the time, but his sentence patterns seem to be V-O-S mostly. Frank Oz has said that this way of talking represents Yoda's wisdom and sence for the future.

If you aren't very familiar with sentence structures, here are a few examples.

S-V Simple, normal dialect.


"You are right."

"You" is the subject, the verb is "are". There is no Object in this simple sentence. This is the way the humans talk, for the most part in Star Wars, at least when they are speaking in Galactic Basic.


S-V-O Slightly more complex, normal dialect.


"You should destroy that book."

"You" is the subject, "destroy" is the verb and "book" is the object.


V-O-S Yoda's Dialect.

"Take you too him, I will"

"Take" is the verb, I think "him" is the object, and "I" is the subject.


Well, I think that is enough examples. If you don't get sentence sturcture still, that's ok, the blog will probably make sense to you still.

I can think of only two instances where Yoda actually talks normally. Where his patterns are S-V-O. they are:

In TESB, when he says "You seek Yoda!". I know this is a very small part, but I like it, one of the only times Yoda's sentence is normal.
S: You
V: seek
O: Yoda

The other one is in ROTJ, when Yoda says "That is the way of things.". This is something somebody might normally say.

S: That
V: is
O: things

I bet if I tried, I could think of more times when Yoda talks normally, but I am not thinking at the moment. If you think of any, you are more than welcome to tell me about it. For you English/Galactic Basic wizzes out there, I hope I didn't get any of it wrong, but I'm not an expert at this. Comments more than welcome.
