 | Where Did Leia Learn To Speak Ubese? |
Hi everybody. I have a question(retorical, though). In ROTJ, wasn't it Leia who was that bounty hunter who brought Chewie to Jabba? Well, how did she speak Ubese like that, when she was negotiating with Jabba? Cuz, I think C3PO is the only one I have ever seen who speaks english and another Language. I know many characters can understand 2 Languages, but who really speaks 2 or more?
I can't think of anything at the moment. But back to the origional question, how was Leia abel to Speak Ubese? Perhaps the helmet has some kind of Language converter. Along with a voice changer. Does anyone have ideas?

I am not sure but I think that she had some kind of thing in her helmt that not only changed her voice, but spoke in a different language.

I think it was just a voice changer, becuase :
#1, she spoke to Han later in perfect basic( except for the accent)
#2 I would be very hard for a human to speak that way anyways, look at Han he can't speak Wookie

In Shadows of the Empire, it said that Leia had learned how to speak Ubese. The helmet did have a voice changer though.

Thanks for the comments. Jediknight2210, I think it was a voice changer. And your points are pretty much what I was trying to say. I agree with them. Jedi~Tahl, you are probably right about that. But mystaerious how nonef the humans ever seem to speak another language, except Leia in the instance. and thanks, Lord Sideous 33!

Ani also spoke to Watto in whatever language he spoke. I don't think he spoke Huttese to Sebulba, so that's at least three that Ani could speak. Plus, I know he doesn't get it all, but he seems to get the gist of whatever R2 is beeping and whirring at him! And yes, why do all the humanoids seem to speak english/basic, other than the practicality factor?

Well, Zela, Most things in Star Wars understand at least a few languages, but don't seem to speak them. I strongly belive that Anakin was speaking Huttese to Watto. remember Tatooine is controlled by the huts, so they speak Huttese and English. but, I might be wrong. besides, what language do you think they were speaking? huttese is a big Language. And Jediknight2210, you are certainly welcome. again, sorry I forgot about Anakin speaking Huttese in TPM.

I guess I always thought they were speaking whatever language Dugs speak. Duggese? I don't know. When he makes comments at other times, even though I certainly don't understand it, it sounds like the same language to me so I thought it must be his. But, i definitely agree with your reasoning that it's a Hutt ruled planet and so that is probably the most widely spoken language. Good point.

Thanks. And iff you have the DVD subtitles on, it tells you what language they are speaking in that instance. I am not entirely sure there is such a thing as Duggese, though. I could be wrong.

I don't think I've ever watched them with the subtitles on, but I will next time. Thanks for the tip Ki Adi Andy. I feel a little silly now that I didn't know!!!

I'm pretty sure Sebulba was speaking in huttese. If you notice, he uses the same words for bantha fodder (something along the lines of poodoo) as Jabba uses.

To me, Huttese seems to be a very common language amungst the more shady of the galacies species. I mean the Hutts practically controlled all of the smuggling and all the different species at Jabba's palace, they would have surely all been able to at least have a basic understanding of the language.
Anakin would have know Huttese too. He was a owned by one. This leads me to believe he was speaking Huttese to Sebulba.
And remember Han could understand it clearly too, even if he never actually spoke it.

My you're really on a language kick, aren't you? I feel you on that, though, I'm a language buff myself. I can think of two possibilities here. One has been mentioned, a universal translator in the helmet, which wouldn't surprise me; it could probably be turned off and on relatively easily. Another possibility relates to the fact that Leia was a senator, and in the diplomatic arena it's often important if not necessary at least to understand if not speak more than one language.
To be continued....(I know, I talk alot)

In terms of what languages Watto and Sebulba speak, I was under the impression it was Huttese; from what I've read in the databank it's not uncommon for one race to adopt another's language as their native language. Rodians spring to mind, they adopted Huttese as their native language. It could also be a matter of 'When in Rome', or 'When on Tatooine' in this case.

If there are such things as language converters, why do we need 3PO?
