Wookieepedia: A Staggering Enterprise
Many people are familiar with Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. You can find information on just about anything here, from Art to Mesopotamia to Xenu. The appeal, however, is not only that the database is free, but anyone with internet access can add to it. Wikicities seems to be a spin-off of this system, providing a space for individuals to build an intricate encyclopedia devoted to a single subject. And some enterprising Star Wars fans have gone ahead and done just that for everything that has to do with a galaxy far, far away.

In the vein of the A Guide to the Star Wars Universe series and the Behind the Magic CD-ROM, and rivaling the well-known Completely Unofficial Star Wars Encyclopedia in scope, Wookieepedia covers everything from Droidspeak to Xim the Despot and seems to be growing daily. Begun by Chad Barbry, a.k.a. "WhiteBoy," on March 4, 2005, this unofficial resource has taken Star Wars fandom by storm. Though not an official database like the Star Wars Databank, Wookieepedia's regular contributors are a top-notch bunch of dedicated Star Warriors and capable writers. Simply put, what they've been able to accomplish is staggering, creating a comprehensive and thoroughly researched guide full of detailed text, photos, and links that'll leave you picking your jaw up off the keyboard.

My favorite entries are these two:

Abel G. Peña

Halagad Ventor

As far as I know, they're always looking for new Wookieepedians, so curious parties might want to cruise by. Please respect these fine people's efforts, and refrain from vandalizing their pages.

I happened upon this a few weeks back while ego-surfing. Cool stuff - nice official feel to it.

Yes, ok fine. So I ego-surf. Doesn't mean I find anything :0)

Yep I agree.

And try ego-surfing with a "ñ" in your name. Annoying. :)

It's a truly awesome project, thanks for the kind words Halagad :) Ever since i discovered the site in July, making contributions to it has become something of an unhealthy addiction.

It's destined to become the most comprehensive Star Wars encyclopedia EVER, if it's not already (not counting the Holocron of course, which is not accessible to the public). And it's still very young, at just over 14,000 articles.

Join us!

And speaking of ego-surfing, I am known as Azizlight on Wookieepedia.

I was only aware of the Star Wars Wikicity in passing before now - I'll have to look further into it.

The appeal, however, is not only that the database is free, but anyone with internet access can add to it.

A fact not lost, I think, even in the use of the word "free" in the title. Have you ever noticed how they translated "The Free Encyclopedia" into, say, the Romance languages?

Yeah, that's one of the obvious issues with the Wiki format -- at least, that's what people think first if you just tell them about it. But I once read that a profanity randomly inserted into a random page on Wikipedia is removed in, on average, about 6 minutes. :O

And, to the Wookieepedians -- keep up the great work!

As a member of Wookieepedia, I would like to showcase to any newcomers our finest achievement in article writing, and something every other article should aspire to be: Palpatine. It has basically anything you could want to know about him, and is our longest article at nearly 80kb.

I heard something along those lines too.

DON'T try this at home, kids! :p

Thanks for dropping in MK, and thanks for helping to create such a useful resource.
