Here's the Thing About the Dark Side...
All this talk about the Sith has naturally engendered discussion about the nature of the Force. Over at the Evil Never Dies discussion thread on TheForce.net, there's been talk of Chaos, the Sith afterlife, and whether the dark side of the Force can be used for noble purposes. Below are some impromptu thoughts:

Here's the thing about the dark side. The dark side is whatever you're inherently drawn to, but which you feel to be immoral. Which is to say, this thing (eating, alcohol, S&M, picking your nose, etc.; it'll vary from person to person) may not be immoral, from a certain point of view, but insofar as that point of view is not yours or does not gel with your system of belief, or (assuming you can philosophize your way into a perfectly legitimate justification) insofar as you cannot/don't remain viscerally convinced the thing isn't immoral, that thing is your dark side. It can be anger, it can be hate and aggression, as Yoda says, but if those things aren't your "buttons," those aren't the true barometers of the dark side for you. It's that thing.

Therefore, no, I don't think it's possible to justify the use of the dark side in any way. Not when it's truly the dark side. How will you know if it truly is? Yoda said it best, "You WILL know. When you are calm, at peace." The dark side is that thing which each of us often fears to even think about, and it must be endlessly combated (which isn't the same thing as to say it must be endlessly defeated).

That's too difficult, someone might say.

It certainly seems that way, doesn't it. ~ Abel G. Peņa

Nice. In my household we've been having a lot of debate about compulsive/addicitive behavior of late. I would add that the darkside is something you are not just drawn to, but at times feel so sucked into that it feels you have no choice. You feel like you don't have the power to stop the desire to do the thing that makes you feel horrible afterwards. I agree that from the way you describe it the darkside is never okay to use.

The Force doesn't really have a dark side. We each have our own dark side that we struggle with. In the GFFA, the Force is far more powerful than anything we have in reality, so Force-sensitive beings have even more temptation to give in to their weaker nature and use the Force in a manner against their morality.

This pen sitting on my desk doesn't have a dark side. But if I pick it up and stab someone, you could call that the dark side of the pen. If I use it to write my mom a letter, it's the light side of the pen. It's not really the pen's dark side; it's mine.

That's well said, anakinside1. That feeling that we have no choice is something we've all felt, and is terribly, terribly deceptive. To even admit of the possibility that there might be an alternative is often always enough to save us from the despair of the dark side. At that point, it's just a matter of will.

Terrific example, rj. :)

Well said, Halagad. So here's an idea I've been kicking around lately (and this is officially my first blog response ever so suggestion are welcome):

In RotJ Vader goads Luke into attacking him by threatening his sister, and then Luke gives in (however temporarily) to his Dark Side to defeat his father. Do you think possibly the price Luke pays for this transgression is the death of his father? Could Luke have saved Vader w/o killing him if he hadn't tapped his own dark side?

Maybe during Vader's trial he and Luke could've had some real quality father-son moments that could've helped Luke with that whole Dark Empire thing.
