The Coolest Thing in Star Wars is ... Me?
UPDATE: Looks like my involvement in the award is over. I topped out at 14 votes, tying distinguished Star Wars author Timothy Zahn. Not bad for a farmboy from California ... I mean, fanboy. ;)

Thanks for the nomination and votes, folks! It's been an honor.

What does the cool side of the Force look like?

Lemme tell you, homeboy ... pretty cool.

I'm flattered and flabbergasted about a bit of recent news I've come across. The knowledgeable cats over at Wookieepedia have nominated "Abel G. Peņa" for the title of Coolest Thing Ever in Star Wars, a tribute developed in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the saga.

I'm only one among an eclectic cast of 200-plus candidates -- inanimate, animate, and animated -- that looks like it belongs on a California recall election ballot. The nominees for coolest "thing" ever in Star Wars run the gamut from characters like Yoda and Thrawn, music like The Imperial March and the cantina band song, movie quotations like Palpatine's "Unlimited power!", cool designs like Luke's poncho and Leia's infamous hairdo, lightsaber duels like Luke vs. Vader, simple things like the straightforward nominations "aliens" and "lightsabers," silly things like "K'Kruhk's Hat" and "Killer-RoboLeia-2000," and finally real people like the heroic Ghyslain (a.k.a. The Star Wars Kid), the maker George Lucas, and yours truly. It looks like Yoda and The Imperial March are killing the competition, but at 11 votes, I'm not doing too shabby. B-)

I'm always very touched by this sort of acknowledgment. I put a lot of hours and passion into my Star Wars work, and have always tried to treat the fans with respect and as friends. Thanks for being so cool in kind. You like me. You really like me.

The Wookieepedia nominees I mentioned are only the tip of the iceberg, so pop over there and check out the rest of the coolest things to ever grace that awesome galaxy far, far away ~ Abel G. Peņa

Your passion and enjoyment of Star Wars comes though, so it doesn't surprise me that you'd nab a few votes over there. With a strong push, you just might pass Admiral Ackbar. And then you could finally print up those t-shirts that say "I'm Cooler than a Mon Cal".

Congrats on your nomination - it is well deserved!
Sadly my vote went elsewhere, but I'm happy to see that you are tying Aayla Secura!

K'Kruhk's Hat

:^O

This hat has quite the cult following. There are threads on TheForce.net and darkhorse.com dedicated to this hat's powers. It's the Star Wars version of Chuck Norris.

Thanks nob01. I think I can take Aayla. Anywhere she likes, really.

I mean, you gotta admit--it is freakin' sweet.

It's the Star Wars version of Chuck Norris.

I think Kyle Katarn might be the SW version of Chuck. The Hat is almost like the One Ring ... or George Lucas' flannel shirt.

I'm glad I found out about how great K'kruhk's hat was too.... :D

I may just register so I can vote. Exar Kun's double-edged lightsaber will get my vote, methinks.

I'm shocked that Hoth is doing better in the voting... or am I missing the point?

You can't argue that Hoth is among the "coolest" things in Star Wars, can you?

Yuk, yuk.

it's my fervent wish that the "Star Wars Kid" kid kicks fervent ### in real life but contiues to love The Force and remembers the joy.

but............................remember HIGH SCHOOL and what was like to be different and have the beauty that you loved trashed and ridiculed?

we should all contribute to the well being of this beautiful child who saw the pixie dust.

Congratulations! :D I know a large portion of the fandom is rooting for you. Each of your articles has been successively more brilliant, incorporating serious scientific and cultural significance into a sometimes whimsical mythos. Who else can rehabilitate Tales humor stories as valid elements of the Expanded Universe (okay, Daniel Wallace also gets major points for giving the Great Heap and anthropological history... :^O)? Under your influence, Star Wars has become a coherent, holistic study. So, while I won't be voting, I extend my sincerest good wishes.

One complaint about this vote: why has the word "Mofference" remained un-nominated...?

Thank you Grand Admiral Sean8. As the saying goes, it's an honor just to be nominated. Coming from a background of one of the most academic disciplines, it's nearly impossible not to want to integrate some serious infrastructure into the Star Wars mythology whenever I have a chance. That said, I'll bend over backward to make sure the highfalutin stuff is lacquered in cool ... such as an alien grand admiral with blue skin and red eyes. ;) To instruct and delight, as another saying goes.

I think Dan has really shined in his last two books. I thought his background for the Kenner "monster droid" in the New Essential Guide to Droids was inspired, while the New Essential Chronology is simply stunning.

Your involvement isn't over. You'll always be one of the coolest things in Star Wars, even if you didn't make the final vote cut.

Indeed. And quite honestly, why didn't this thing win outright?

Wow...something that I did...got noticed...by Abel.

*waves hand shamelessly*

I nominated you Abel, honestly I did!

Now, uh, if you look at my blog you will see that it correlates with the comments posted on the user page of The fourdotelipsis on Wookieepedia.

Well...the nomination was for, essentially, and inadverntently making Wookieepedia more workable.

Penaism: The act of de-stupifying canon, and making it interesting.

Shucks. You say that to all the Star Wars authors, I bet.

Hi Abel - congratulations on your 14 votes! I tried looking just now at the history of the contest before I closed it....

The server timed out and my browser couldn't load it :) It took me a bit to work around having the entire page load.

One complaint about this vote: why has the word "Mofference" remained un-nominated...?

It was, but only got seven votes since it came in to the contest late.
