Holidays, holidays. We all love them and frankly we have so many. From celebrations of people who thought they discovered the other side of the world (and they didn't) to people wearing green and drinking beer for no other reason than its socially okay.
Yesterday, it was okay to drink beer on a Tuesday because of Cinco de Mayo. The real story of the holiday has been lost but can be
found here. I find it interesting that it's a celebration of a battle won, but a war lost. With some minor help from the US, the Mexicans would again gain their independence (this time from France), but why celebrate such an occasion so much? Ironically, the article states its not widely celebrated holiday in Mexico. I don't live there and don't know, but it's interesting.
I digest. My point in all this is one that I've seen raised before on this website. Where are the holidays in Star Wars?
Obviously, there isn't time in the movies to show kiddos sitting around a decorated house opening gifts, but you think there would be something in the EU. I should state, I've been reading novels only and started chronologically. There could be something out there, I'm just not aware of it. I'm about 67 books in (just about to the NJO) but not one mention of a holiday anywhere in my readings to this point. I just find it strange, that's all. Rebel Independence Day? Battle of Yavin Day? A celebration of the defeat of the Sith (Old Republic stuff, when they THOUGHT they defeated the Sith)? The bottom line is, it's probably just not that interesting to read or watch. Being the lover of history that I am, I think it is something missing in the GFFA (That might be the first time I've ever used that acronym).

After watching the OT for the first time in sometime, I noticed a few things that make it, in my mind, a better story than the PT.
It all comes down to the camaraderie between the principle characters. Let me state, I love the characters in the PT, but there was just so much going on, there was never time to develop that sense of friendship the OT had. I mean Han's face in ESB when he realizes he has been tortured as a trap for Luke. It's priceless. He doesn't even care anymore that Vader has had his way with him. His only concern is that Luke is in trouble. The thing of it is, you know he cares because of the development of the friendships in ANH and ESB. I'm guessing there just wasn't screen time for it in the PT. When Anakin and Obi Wan say goodbye to each other in ROTS and there is that touching line about being friends and such, it is the only time we really see them like that. The fact there was a need for that line at all supports my point of the camaraderie not existing. I mean, did we ever need to hear Luke tell Han that, "Hey, you're my best friend." No, because you didn't need to. You knew it already. Meh, maybe I'm just an old codger that grew up with the OT and I look for any reason to make it better than the PT. You know what though? When I have time to watch on SW movie, it is almost always a PT film.

I saw the Wolverine film and it was......okay. I'm starting to think maybe they should have stopped with X-Men 2. I mean, it had its moments, but after seeing that, I went home and watched X 1 to see how it fits and the bottom line is, it doesn't. If you go to see a nice popcorn movie with some cool action, then you will enjoy it. If your looking for continuity in a big story arc? The continuity just isn't there. I won't spoil anything, but it's a decent flick.
I am much more excited about seeing Star Trek this weekend in IMAX (yes!). Yes, I'm somewhat of a Trekkie. Its always been funny to me how the movies are good on the even numbers, so I guess technically this will be a good one since its before Star Trek 1, this must be Star Trek Zero. Zero is even.........right?
Happy blogging and keep the peace my friends.
