Look Honey!...Star Wars Stuff!!!
I took my youngest daughter to Disneyland the other day. Unexpectedly. You know that feeling you get when you find a twenty dollar bill crumpled in the pocket of a pair of jeans you're about to wash, or the thrill you get when your spouse/friend/significant other says, "Let's go to the movies tonight to see (whatever movie you're dying to see but you know he/she isn't)?" That's how I felt the other day.

About two weeks ago, it hit me that an opportunity lay within my grasp, all for the "price" of re-arranging my schedule, taking my daughter out of school for a few days, and the $10.00 fee for the frequent flyer tickets. Husband of amidalooine was scheduled to attend a conference in Anaheim, California, and goshdarnit, why, I asked myself, shouldn't I go, too, or at least join him for part of the trip once he got out there (which is what I did)? I rarely get to travel with my hubby and just the youngest padawan, and I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to visit some very dear friends (more about that in a minute), and I have to confess that I was stressed out to the max and ready for a break.

I love to travel. Love it. Everything about it. I love the preparation, the knowing feeling I have when I drive to the airport, the "in crowd" sensation that goes with boarding a flight with a bunch of strangers who, for a few brief hours, are bound for the exact same destination I am. I love the swell of pride that overwhelms me to the point of tears sometimes when I take my 8-year-old's small hand in mine and point out huge planes and explain airport security to her while passersby look on with smiles. I just love to travel, especially with my baby.

Flight? Check. Rental car? Check? Directions? No problem. As we approached my husband's hotel on the trip from LAX, though, the tenor of my trip changed drastically. There it was, within walking distance of the hotel. Disneyland!

I can't recall the last time I felt as carefree as I did strolling down the boulevard, hand in hand with my little girl, toward Mickey's house. It was just so easy! We watched the Main Street parade and rode rides and bought ourselves matching Minnie ears (yes, I wore them proudly!), and later, my husband was able to join us for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and Dumbo and the teacups and fireworks. It was such a magical night...and then I saw it...

Star Wars stuff!

In the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland, there's a whole store devoted to Star Wars next to a ride called Star Tours. I couldn't ride the ride (once upon a time in a galaxy far, far before children, my senses could handle virtual rides with realistic movement...now such things just make me feel the need to yak), but when I walked into the store with my nearest and dearest, I was overwhelmed by that feeling. You know the one. The one where your eyes glaze over at the light sabers and voice changer Darth Vader masks and action figures, and you are compelled to buy things you can't afford. It was the strangest sensation. I was just so...excited. There I was in Disneyland, already on a "this is so freaking cool" high, and I caught site of Yoda and Chewie and Darth Tater t-shirts, and I was just...in SW heaven. Mr. 'looine and the padawan went off in search of sweatshirts for us (I had no idea it was possible to get quite that chilly at night in Los Angeles) and I stood staring at the blaster I decided I want for Christmas, at home in the GFFA. Bliss.

While our impromptu trip to Disneyland brought me unexpectedly close to this Star Wars world that I have come to love so much, my destination the next day made me realize that there are places that might start with Star Wars, but have gone so far beyond the saga and this blogosphere that they are no longer about SW at all. The next day I visited my dear friends, the Stooge family, and I realized, with an even stronger pull on my heart than I felt in May, that these people are like family to me. I was so excited to introduce my baby girl to Stooge et al, and though the Stooge, my padawan, and I did have the awesome opportunity to watch AOTC clones together (how cool is that?!), my relationship with my dear muppet friend and his family, is no longer rooted in Star Wars. If our beloved saga went away forever, the Stooges and I would still be great friends, special friends. How very fortunate I am to have them in my life; I just feel so at home there with them. I miss them already.

Now, back to my Christmas list....blaster, Anakin action figure, Yoda slippers....

:)

What an awesome time you had!!!!! How I envy you.... I'd love to take my Padawans to D-Land, but alas it's not in the cards for a while (credit cards, that is!)

Stooge has already bragged about you coming to visit! LOL

Next time, come for longer! We had such fun, but it was too brief. I'll remember to show you that blaster, too. And wasn't it considerate of me to arrange for you to experience a minor earthquake?

PS -- noticed how all my jokes this week are from AOTC? ;)

Ah, gw...I refuse to think about my credit card bills, lol!!! If I'd planned to be feet from Disneyland, I might not have even planned to go there, you know? I certainly didn't plan for it $$$ wise! But the thrill of discovering it right there was just too much for me!! :D

Stooge, that earthquake was FREAKING COOL!!!! Too bad all earthquakes can't be that minor and inconsequential. I'd imagine that a big one is quite awful. :( I do realize that.

And yes, I did notice the AOTC jokes!!!!! Folks....I got to see the mind of The Great Stooge in action!!! :D (He really does just sit there thinking funny stuff up!...It's really quite amazing!)

Your excuse for not taking the Star Tours ride doesn't cut it. A little yak for a lifetime of memories? It's better than partying in Las Vegas, because, even though there's yak, you'll still remember.

J2 loves the Dumbo ride. We have to navigate around it or else he'll make us take the ride. He also call the teacups "coffee cups" -- the Mad Hatter took issue with him over that one.

Well the earth quake was only like a 4 wasnt it. My seismographs out there arent the greatest. But you are lucky because you got to see stooge. That and the whole disney land thing. One thing you might have been able to do to go on star tours was to take some ginger pills.

I met two kids at my outing at the park two weeks ago (in costume) that had recently been to Disneyland Star Wars weekends... one had a Jedi Academy shirt on , so we dueled... and the other one, a little girl of about 4, said "You look like Star Wars, I love Star Wars."

I was just thinking of the great memories your youngling will have of getting to go as a surprise, and without her older siblings! woo-hoo! That's a memory of a lifetime....

And meeting the Stooges, too... :D

Oh...it sounds like you had such a nice time :) I'm glad you were able to get away, if even for a short time.

I have never been to Disney Land, but have heard about Star Tours. Truly sounds like a great time for anyone who goes.

Absolutely love the Minnie ears :D You two look lovely :x

What a cute pic, ami! You and #5 look like you're having a blast. Aren't those spontaneous jaunts the best? Especially when SW is involved.

Glad that you had fun with the Stooges. You're right about the friendships that have developed here. I feel like I've known my "girls" forever, apart from SW.

A little yak for a lifetime of memories?

I'm not buying it. There's precious little in this life that's worth yakking for...though SW would certainly be up there! :D

But you are lucky because you got to see stooge

Absolutely, zach. Stooge is one in a million....or at least one in 174...something like that! :D

don't you love those unexpected surprises?

They're the best kind, gencrs

Traveling is AWESOME, usetheforce19!!! I love it.

Ooooohhhh, no, jk. The blaster I want is just basic, like the one Leia shoots in ANH. That one you linked to is SWEET!! :D

This trip was definitely like that, JMW. I'm so glad I had this opportunity!

Thanks for the snaps, leia!!! I loved that my daughter and I wore out ears through Disneyland proudly!!

We did not go to the Jedi Academy show, hansgirl. No time! #5 probably would have liked it, though!

You look like Star Wars, I love Star Wars

Late to the conversation, but I couldn't resist commenting...

Great story! I love Disneyland/Disneyworld.

My wife and I took our honeymoon to Disneyworld several years ago. I have a picture of myself posing in front of the AT-AT that is by the Star Tours ride at what was then called MGM studios. I spent quite a bit of time in the gift shop. I love that my wife humors me like that.

Hey Pug!...I think about how lucky and amazing it is to have found some of the most significant people in my life through Star Wars all the time!

Flutter in my belly was right, GB. I just had this feeling wash over me when I saw the SW stuff. It was so cool!!

Thanks for the comment, Smuggler Jedi! My husband humors me and my obsession, too!!! Are you relatively new around here (I noticed that you're on blog entry #3)? If so, belated welcome! Share lots of stories about those kids of yours! ;)

Ok, I have no idea how this one snuck under the blog radar but, what a fantastic blog it was!

Glad you had a great time out there. Sometimes, it's better to say "just f-it" and do things on a whim than to have them all planned out. Think about it.... this way, you didn't have the stress of planning your day at Disney - you just went with it!

Awesome read here, Ami....
