 | And What of These Clone Wars? |
My mind is wandering on this fine Saturday. I was thinking about the new Clone Wars film and TV series, quickly browsing the blogs, caught one by JediMaster Jessica_ about the idea of Anakin having a padawan, and was struck by what these new additions to the GFFA might mean to me.
I feel as if I have a vested interest in the success of the Clone Wars film and TV series. Don't we all, really? Much of the EU is strictly the territory of die hard fans, those like ourselves who devour all things Star Wars and thirst for more. The fact that we'll be lining up in droves on August 15 to see the new film is a given. We aren't the ones who need to love this new stuff. It's the borderline fans and potential new fanatics who must feel the Star Wars tractor beam's effects. Bring on the newbies!
For those of us who are already addicted, the Clone Wars film and series offer mainstream chances to flesh out the story that had to be contained within the time constraints of Revenge of the Sith. I don't know about you, but I wanted to know everything that happened after Anakin and Padme said, "I do." Though I loved ROTS, and it remains my favorite of the six films, the opportunity to know even more about the events leading up to it gives me a little thrill.
This is prime time in the realm of the PT! With the exceptions of Qui-Gon, Shmi, and Darth Maul, all of our favorite characters from the PT films are in place (and there's room for blue ghost visions of Qui-Gon, thanks to that well timed "Noooooooooooooooo!" when Anakin killed the Tuskens in AOTC). Count Dooku, a fascinating and somewhat undeveloped character, should be featured during the new film and series, along with his cyborg partner in crime, General Grievous. Jango might be gone, but there's Boba in the wings, hitting puberty and fueling the rage at losing his father that eventually compels him to take up the bounty hunter's mantle and trap Han for Darth Vader years later. Perhaps we'll get to see Obi-wan morph from the suave Jedi Master he is in AOTC, thrust into the position of father to the young man he loved like a brother, into the time-worn but clearly rejuvenated and more equal partner to Anakin that we briefly saw him as in ROTS. I loved the dynamic between Obi-wan and Anakin in the beginning parts of ROTS, and I can't wait to see more of that relationship.
Most intriguing to me, not unexpectedly, is the opportunity this new film and series will give us, to see Anakin and Padme, joined by their secret love, fighting the fights that need to be fought on the front lines, behind the political scenes, and in their most intimate moments together as husband and wife. Before the twins. One of the biggest criticisms of Padme as a character is her transformation from passionate defender of the ideals that eventually led to the Rebellion, to an emotional, quivering wreck of a hormonally charged pregnant babe, concerned with nothing more than brushing her hair and getting cozy with Anakin in her dreamworld on Naboo. Too few people recognize the subtleties of her increasing strength as she gives birth to the rebellion and its guardians inside her. It makes me crazy.
So where does Ahsota fit into all of this, I wonder? There is already enough in place from the films themselves to fuel hundreds of plot lines during the Clone Wars time period. I can only hope that this highly-touted new character will compliment the plot that is already in place and not detract from it. Anakin...a mentor? Most of us are still trying to picture Anakin as a husband and father. I trust that these new productions will allow us to see the best of both worlds of Anakin Skywalker, to see the heart that will continue to beat beneath the black suit that Darth Vader will wear.
This is an exciting time for us! Especially if you're a fan of Anakin Skywalker.

I'm also looking forward to seeing more about the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. The Clone Wars is also a chance for us to see Anakin trying to grow up into the
Jedi we know he could have been.
The anticipation leave me with more questions than answers. Hopefully the
Clone Wars will be a whole new adventure

If all these aspects of the saga didn't speak to each one of us individually on a personal and intimate level, there wouldn't be much use for these blogs or the boards. Bring it on!

Thanks, Blue X-Wing Pilot!! You know...I still have your survey rattling around here, waiting to blog!

You're right as always, jk. I was actually thinking about that today...that an animated film actually gives another whole dimension to the saga, more ways to speak to more people. Awesome!

I loved the dynamic between Obi-wan and Anakin in the beginning parts of ROTS, and I can't wait to see more of that relationship.
The first 20 or so minutes of ROTS is so awesome... even the deleted scenes of the two of them are awesome... I saw Ewan in an interview say that part of the movie was so important because you could how special the relationship was that was lost...
Too few people recognize the subtleties of her increasing strength as she gives birth to the rebellion and its guardians inside her.
All her good Rebellion starting scenes were cut! All we see is the weak Padme that loses the will to live when she has two beautiful babies to take care of!

Someone showed me a book, and I think it may have been "dressing the galaxy" there's a costume drawing of Padme holding a baby.... it was so sweet.... the early death may have been a last minute addition, but I hated it.....
Anakin...a mentor?
I can't see this... he is too young and reckless, much like Obi-Wan in TPM... he was not ready to have a Padawan, and neither is Anakin...
There's endless possibilities for storylines here... !

I'm really looking forward to this... there are so many possibilites. One of them being that we will hopefully see a side to these characters that we haven't, and it will really enhance and change the way we view the saga we have now... in the same way the prequels changed the way we view the OT.
Hopefully some of the choices and actions that have been questioned relentlessly, and the reasonings behind them, will be brought to light and explained....
Or not! But it'll still be fun!
Woo hoo! Bring on more SW!

Great blog Ami, and I agree completely. The new series will open up new stories that will allow us to see other sides of Anakin (such as being a mentor) and explore the relationships that make him into what he would become. It will surely have most excellent battle scenes and action sequences that us SW fans crave in addition to the chance at exploring Anakin's fall more closely.
All in all, I can't wait for it to start ... and exploring it more within our blogs as well!

I still think around 2005 ish it was as good as it could get. The internet wasnt as wide spread in 1999 or even advanced enough for 2002. Perhaps 2008 can make that better. They like to follow a three year trend dont they. Maybe we will get something in 2011.

With all the new excitement about the new characters, I wonder if we will see more of Boba Fett in the new series. I think it would be great (mainly because he is one of my favorite characters) to develop more of his young life. I enjoyed Legacy of the Force: Bloodlines (it's probably my favorite of the series so far, though I've only read the first three), and I wonder if we will see more of Boba. And what about Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba? Could they be a part of this?
The galaxy opens up before us...

Well, I don't know if we really will. According to Labyrinth of Evil, the General was already a machine at the Battle of Geonosis, where he...acquired...many of his prized lightsabers in the underground. Maybe we'll see some of the battles in the Geonosian caverns...who knows?

I hate to say it, but they're mostly men...who cannot ever possibly understand the emotional complexity of becoming a mother (no offense, guys, just stating the facts!)
So where does Ahsota fit into all of this, I wonder? I'm actually very excited about this new character addition - at first I was like: "huh? You've got to be kidding me!" But, I've since warmed up to the idea.

I'll be watching it to be sure, though I have some misgivings about the continuity of the whole padawan thing. Does she die early on or is she moved to another teacher. The stories already told jump around the few years between AOTC and ROTS pretty thoroughly. There is no mention of a padawan anywhere. Nor does there seem to have been time for it. It's what it is though and I will get over it.
I owe you an email Ami, but it has been sitting in my drafts forever now, and I just haven't seemed to be able to get it finished. I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.

It's true, guys, though I think there are a few who do get it. The physical and emotional energy it takes to gestate are highly underrated.
I hope I can warm up to Ahsota as the film's release date gets closer, too, mo2yp.

I'm way in the minority here, but these toons seem to me that they're just an excuse to cash in. Not that I'll ever watch them, but I'm intrigued to know who's written the stories and whether George (if he's not the writer) has sanctioned them. Anakin having a padawan? That's just ludicrous in the established timeline. He wasn't even knighted until the Clone Wars were nearing the end, so is the toon series going to concentrate on the last several months of the war, with so much going on that's already been established?

I know it's George's train set and he can do with it what he wishes, which is half the problem for me. He might introduce all these fabulous ideas and stories that completely destroy everything in the EU that's been established in that era.
Which is one of the reasons why I'm tuning out.

I am actually supposed to be out of the country on August 15, and I'm beginning to think that might be a good thing. If I hear that the film has messed with the continuity of the story too much, I might think twice about seeing it.
OK, so that's not very likely. But at least I can go into it prepared.

Hello there, amidalooine!
Wonderful blog, I greatly enjoy how you approach the upcoming Clone Wars movie/series.
I have always been somewhat disappointed that the Prequels hardly elaborated on that famous line, delivered so beautifully by Sir Alec: "And he was a good friend".
The padawan may well help to flesh out Ani's human traits while he is on a tour of duty, far away from Padme. Perhaps Ahsota loses her mentor in battle and good ol' selfless Ani takes her under his wing.
So I couldn't agree more with you, amidalooine, there's still gold waiting to be mined in Anakin. And Grievous. And Dooku.
I am excited in a good way

I LOVE your explanation of how someone as unlikely as Anakin might end up with a padawan. Makes it more believable.
I can't get enough of Obi-wan and Anakin's friendship. I know that I didn't watch ANH the same way after ROTS came out...because of the line you mentioned. It's heartbreaking.
Thanks for stopping by!
