QUI-GON : Don't center on your anxiety, Obi-Wan. Keep your concentration here and now where it belongs.

OBI-WAN : Master Yoda says I should be mindful of the future...

QUI-GON : .....but not at the expense of the moment. Be mindful of the
living Force, my young Padawan.

The Phantom Menace (1999)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've read a bunch of blogs about Obi-Wan Kenobi this week, thanks to nob01.

I've enjoyed all them. In fact, I think they've pretty much covered why we all like Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi. As a result, I'd like to focus on what I think is Ben's single greatest moment in the entire saga and his entire life. The funny thing about this moment is the fact that HE WASN'T EVEN THERE!

Let me set the scene: A desperate battle rages around a planet-destroying battle station. A planet whose inhabitants are trying desperately to bring liberty, peace, and justice back to the galaxy after 20 years of tyrannical rule. As fighters are slowly extinguished like tiny bugs, a solitary ship makes its way along the perimeter of the monstrous 'death star' angling for the shot that will save them all.

And then all goes quiet.

The quiet is happening not because hope is secured but because this lone fighter is going to fail - all is about to be lost.

This solitary warrior, this singular fighter, is going to miss his shot. Luke Skywalker is going to fail and he doesn't even know it.

Luke, figuratively and literally, is stuck in a rut. He is concentrating on instruments that are incapable of calculating the shot given the angle and speed with which he is approaching the exhaust port. He's probably going too fast, but the point is, he's going to miss as Red Leader did moments earlier. He's using imperfect instruments in place of instincts he learned to lean on as a child racing among the dunes. Back then, he seemed to live in the moment, but now that so much is on the line, he's afraid. The trophy this time isn't a desert rodent or a finish line...it's a new hope and a new life. And it's something he's only going to get one shot at. He can't relax as he pushes his face into the viewfinder insisting he can find an electronic answer.

And then it happens. A voice breaks the silence.

Let go.

It's not a stranger's voice. Its calm, its peaceful, and its assured. It's the voice of the newly deceased Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Reaching out from beyond, 'the voice' reminds young Luke of the only lesson that matters in life, whether farming at home, racing friends, or fighting in space: Live in the moment....Let go.

I get chills every time - EVERY TIME - Ben speaks to Luke at this moment. Despite the death, the carnage, the chaos, and the doubt, Ben reminds Luke that none of it matters. As Qui-Gon taught Obi-Wan, its now Ben's turn to teach Luke the greatest lesson a Jedi could ever learn: don't let the regrets of the past or the desires for the future cloud the moment your living in right now: Remember to keep your mind on where you are and what you are doing.

I think the lesson Luke received that virtual day is crucial, especially in light of the current events. I think it would be hard to argue that in today's world there isn't plenty of fear, plenty of carnage, and plenty of doubt. We are all moving forward at what seems like an ever-increasing pace with little wiggle room and plenty of obstructions, some of them dire. And, then, of course, there are those events, like creeping tie-fighters, that come up on our six and that we can do little about except try to limit the damage.

We all have our answers for times like these - some helpful, some not so much. And Star Wars might be a bit too generic to deal with the complex events we encounter so often. However, I don't think any of us would mind, if at a moment of crisis, a friend's voice reached out from beyond and told us the one thing we needed to hear most, that might set our minds at ease so we could concentrate on the moment and not lose hope.

And, as far as movies go, we have Obi-Wan Kenobi to remind of this very thing. We are all human and we all have doubts. We all make mistakes and we all get nervous. And we all fear. The fact that the scene is fictional makes it even better because no one can ever take away or change what was said at the moment (no, not even GL can go back in time and change this) - Kenobi is untouchable. Ben is there in your mind and whenever you need him just as he was for Luke. You have only to stretch out with your feelings to hear him:

Let go.

...dedicated to Kenobi fans everywhere.

Let go.

There may be no better advice in life. It applies to basically everything.

Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue, a wonderful living side by side can grow, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky.

Very thought-provoking entry, k-fan!

Let go.
I believe I share the same feeling you do when Obi-wan speaks to Luke. It's kinda eerie, but in a good way. Obi-wan is trying to tell Luke to rely on himself, not some instrument panel in the cockpit of an X-wing fighter.
Great dedication to Kenobi week!

I am a Kenobi fan; he is the only redeemable character in the prequel trilogy. However I have an alternate view of what is transpiring at this moment. Luke does not have enough control over the Force to send his photon tordedo does the exhaust shaft. More than you realize this scene is controlled by the disembodied Kenobi. His instructions are indeed simple.

-Use the Force, Luke.
-Let go, Luke.
-Luke, trust me.

Obi-wan is one with the Force, he has become more powerful than Darth Vader can possibly imagine. It is his will that guides the missle to its destination. This sequence is one that brings into question the will of the Force. Does it obey your commands or control your actions? In this case its both.

Thanks for the quote!

What can I say...it's one of my favorite scenes.

It's kinda eerie, but in a good way.
It doesn't seem to disturb Luke too much. Not having read anything, it obviously came across as something like cross-talk...though I'm sure he meditated on it later.

It is his will that guides the missle to its destination.
Now THAT is controversial...Off hand, I don't agree with it, but it is interesting.

Well, Ben never said how long you had to let go or if you had to let go with both hands.
I'm sure there is a loophole somewhere for situations such as this...ha!

Wow. Beautifully said, K-fan!

Those are very powerful words indeed. Some people in my life have been brave enough to say them to me, and I can think of a few specific cases when that was exactly what I needed to hear. Not what I wanted, but what I needed. Funny...I can't think of any instances when those words didn't help...

Except maybe for that one hang gliding incident. That hurt.

That truly was a crucial moment in the saga as well as in Luke's life and training. You brought out a fantastic point about it.

Luke's lesson during that intense time also showed just what HE was made of and that he would be able to utilize the meager skills he had up to that point and build on them. He would listen... ;)

Great job, K-fan!! :)

Phenomenal.

I had never really taken that simple line in the movie to mean so much. I knew Obi-Wan (Ben) wanted Luke to trust his feelings and "let go" of the need for depending on technology, but I've not ever dissected it that far. Thanks for adding your insights!! :D

Ohhhh...controversial, indeed. Interestingly enough, in the novel version, Luke doesn't remember firing:

With the confidence of a blind man in familiar surroundings, Luke moved a thumb over several controls, then touched one...he couldn't remember touching the firing stud. (quoted from the book Star Wars: A New Hope)

Personally, I agree w/you, K-Fan...I believe Luke just "let go" so proficiently at that point that he did become one with the Force. It was another of his "first steps into a larger world."

Excellent addition to Obi-Wan week, indeed! :D

Never a wiser statement was uttered.

The will to let go of our natural programming, or tendency to analyze every incident that has or is happening in our daily lives, truly a challenge that is.

You know, k-fan, that I often think about this lesson now that I close in on quite a few decades of life. When young, I, like so many, want to grow up so fast, to have the "freedoms" we see adults "enjoying". In our 20s, we are poised to conquer the world, even though we know it may take a few years (:D) to do so. As we mature into our 30s and 40s, we still think about the future, wondering what's around the corner, are we saving enough money, will we be able to put our kids through college.

I'm still a few years from what some deem "the golden years", but, you know what? Every year, every day, every moment is golden. Just as you said, that is what Obi-wan, Qui-gon and Yoda (he chastised Luke about it in ESB) were saying, what so many of us miss time and time again - Keep your concentration here and now where it belongs.

It's hard not to be swept away in the rat race of life. That's why it's important to stop and smell the roses along the way, to be mindful of the moment, to let go - and truly enjoy the moment for the pure sake of enjoyment.

I know I've taken a slightly different course than where you were headed. It's just a different slant on that particular lesson. (I do get where you're headed.)

Think of it as a different point of view. ;)

Wonderful musings, K-fan.

Ooh! Me too! I agree it is one of the most powerful scenes in the saga... and perfectly illustrates why Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi is the ultimate Jedi. Others may have been more powerful, but Obi-Wan was really the first to get it right, IMO.

Good stuff K-fan and great tie in to current events.

Life can get hard, hectic, and busy. What is ironic is our thoughts are never on where we are, what we are doing. We are usually looking away, to the horizon or the past.

Qui-Gonn is always someone I wish we had more of. Some folks think he is responsible for the carnage of the galaxy (forcing the training of Anakin), but I would argue he isn't. I would argue he was the lone Jedi at that time that truly was trying to understand the Force.

"...here and now where it belongs".

I think you're right. He might have been a bit doubtful about Anakin following his fall, but he never held it against Luke and didn't allow it to distract him from his mission.

We are usually looking away, to the horizon or the past.
I do agree. I think that's why the scene is so critical...Luke is able to do what most of us have such a hard time with. Like everything, it takes patience and practice...lots of practice.

I have a terrible time letting go. It's just so, so hard. And the truly amazing thing that you'd think I would remember is that when I do manage to let go, often the situation I was clinging to gets even better, even stronger, even more profound and in a much better way. I just had to...let go.

I agree...I'm sure Qui-Gon questioned the nature of Anakin's role but not that he had a role to play in the bringing balance back to the Force.

"...BUT HE DID, AND HE PASSED THAT ONTO OBI WAN"
He sure tried...even 20-years later, I'm not sure how much Kenobi learned about this part.
Obi-Wan was open to the Force, but there were still aspects hidden to him, either by choice or circumstance. After all, it was Luke who believed in Vader...not Kenobi.

Powerful entry. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself for a precisely a moment such as this one. The reality is that he may have defeated Vader in their fight, but he understood that there was a bigger fish to fry, so instead he gave his life to find the ability to be places where he otherwise couldn't be, for moments such as this one.
