"With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy." - Anakin Skywalker
"Father, please help me." - Luke Skywalker
"What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?" - Anton Chigurh
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
While the SW blogs have pondered such 'who-would-win' questions, I believe it is Superman vs. Batman that remains most expressive, the most descriptive, and the most relevant today.
To summarize...
Batman is the gritty, dark, loner (usually) fighting in the sewers, below ground and at the heights of power. He is witness to darkness at every level of society; it is a part of him. Although his day-time façade is one of cold professional aloofness, it is his evening guise that shows his true colors. Batman, and those around him, frequently end up bloodied, bruised, and broken. Despite this, he will never stop fighting for justice until he is victorious...or dead.
Superman is the boy-scout, the idealist, the man who flies above the fray to see the good that is in all people. He will endure any hurt, any pain, any insult, to ensure justice is served without prejudice. He is a picture of restraint despite his powers. He remains forever hopeful that mankind will come to their own rescue one day. Until then, he can be counted on to preserve truth and justice with every ounce of his being.
The nature of the question begs one to look at the various strengths and weakness of each being, including physical prowess, mental faculties, and sheer will. The only conclusion I ever come to is that at the end of such a contest desolation alone will remain. And regardless of who physically survives, it is the general population that will suffer as they watch their heroes decimate each other along with any hope for the future.
Nothing will survive.
However, the answer isn't that simple. The question doesn't really ask 'who would win' but 'how can they both survive'. HOW CAN THEY BOTH WIN? But it's more than that, the question is HOW CAN WE ALL WIN?
HOW CAN A BATTLE BETWEEN TWO TITANS FIGHTING FOR THE SAME GOAL ENSURE THEY AND WE AREN'T DESTROYED IN THE PROCESS?!
The answer is clear: THEY ONLY WIN, WE ONLY WIN, IF THEY WIN TOGETHER.
Within Star Wars, we have only to look at Anakin and Luke. Each fights for the same goal in their own way: to end conflict, to end fear, to end injustice. Each suffers at the hands of darkness as a result of their own egos, their own fear, and their own desires. While Luke is seen as good and Anakin as bad, neither can reach their ultimate goal...until finally, they unite. Despite severed limbs, bloodied faces, and deep anger, each finally recognizes that they need each other to bring peace into their lives and into the lives of those around them.
It's quaint to say that only through cooperation can real progress be made, but it doesn't make it any less true IMHO. I remain hopeful that regardless of the nature of the conflict, that both heroes will recognize they are part of the same coin...a coin upon which much rests.
End.

...and nice tie-in to NCFOM.
I couldn't help it. I saw the movie this past week and loved it.
Great to see you too.
I've abandoned my child...I mean my blog and my email account.
Hopefully I can make this a habit again (as well as get that picture I've been holding onto for months on end out to you...I'm lame, I'm know.).

You don't have to be a super hero to apply this to how a conflicting relationship should be handled.
Indeed...though in light of today's headlinees you have to wonder if most people are still open to such a suggestion.

While not really related you should check out Return of the Dark Knight if you are really interested in Superman vs Batman.
The answer is clear: THEY ONLY WIN, WE ONLY WIN, IF THEY WIN TOGETHER.
Wow that's an amazing perspective I had not considered!
Glad to see you back!

I really don't know...ha!
...you should check out Return of the Dark Knight...
I found a leather-bound edition at B&N many years ago. It sits upon a full-size steel
end-table shaped into the silhouette of Batman himself (purchased from a now closed Warner Bros studio store) both of which reside within the confines of 'my room'.
It's one of my favorite stories of all time (alongside 'Kingdom Come' by Alex Ross & Mark Waid which has plenty to say about heroes and those who rely on them).

Enjoyed reading this!
While Luke is seen as good and Anakin as bad, neither can reach their ultimate goal...until finally, they unite.
While I agree with the teamwork concept, I also wonder if it can truly be said that either of them actually accomplished what they set out to do in the first place.
they need each other to bring peace into their lives and into the lives of those around them
Was peace really the objective? In retrospect they found satisfaction, but was it only by "moving the goalposts"?.
So good to "see" you again, K-fan!

Me too...
...in the first place.
I suppose it really depends upon which point in the story you focus. From my perspective, I think the goal, if there was one, was more personal than I'm making it out to be. For both, the goal was protecting their family-friends, something each felt they failed at during their lives. Defeating Palps provided them the opportunity to redeem themselves and each other.
Was peace really the objective?
Peace can only exist if it exists in the heart first. If Anankin and Luke could not resolve their conflict, peace at any level would have been very hard to obtain. So, peace was the goal, from a certain point of view.

That explains it. I thought it was my breath.
While I agree that it is only in the spirit of cooperation that both entities can not only survive, but thrive, I find it interesting that in your assessment you mention neither superhero's heart, neither man's inability to fully love. Naturally, this is significant to me. Perhaps if our superheroes were permitted to feel with their whole hearts, they'd resolve enough of the Darkness in their lives to truly make their world a better place.
It is good to see you.

Actually from my perspective it goes back ####her than that. Peace can only exist if there is unrest. Or not peace as my math teacher would want. Kind of like how light cannot exist without dark and vice-versa.

Wow! What an amazing comeback!
But it's more than that, the question is HOW CAN WE ALL WIN? The answer is clear: THEY ONLY WIN, WE ONLY WIN, IF THEY WIN TOGETHER.
Call me a pessimist, but I think it will be a while before we see the answer to that question, literally speaking.

the goal was protecting their family-friends
Which then provided the basis for their cooperation- I can see that.
Peace can only exist if it exists in the heart first.
Nice. That's well said.
So, peace was the goal, from a certain point of view.

Batman or Superman
Wow your going to make me think
Batman, IMO, was a very special human being. He watched his parents murder.
Survied and thrived on making the "bad" guys pay!
Superman fought for justice because his earth parents raised Clark Kent to be a decient
human.

IMO, Anakin was a victom of surcomstance. The day Anakin met Qui-Gon his life changed forever.
Luke was blessed to have been raised in a stable envoriment. The day he met Obi-Wan
his life was also changed forever. Luke just happened to have not had the evil infulence
of Palpatine to manipulate his perspective on life.
Hope you stick around for a while!
Take care,
Leia

Hey! Good to see ya K-fan! I'm a fan of both Superman and Batman ... to me, both represent the stuggle to be the balance between good and evil. And both have the confidence it takes to take justice seriously and uphold it, which I admire. Now I've always been more of a fan of Superman (probably because of his cool powers!), but I've always enjoyed the mystique of Batman, and his ability as a normal human being to do the things he does.
Great blog ... and look forward to hopefully more!

Interesting take on the current state of the union, K-Fan.
The superheroes that play together, stay together.
On a more superficial note, never really liked Superman.
Invincibilty is a bit of a dead end in my book.
And I wanted to so love NCFOM, and pretty much was - I'm all for shaking things up, but...

Wait, what? That's your point of this blog?
Jeez, I thought for sure it was "Luke's lightsaber was green because he learned from Batman's mistakes and got a Kryptonite lightsaber."
Oh well, maybe I'll be able to call the point of your next blog correctly early. Until then, Adam West and I are drawing up plans for a Bat-Lightsaber.

Oh, how profound, k-fan. Here I thought you were setting up a simple what if scenario, and it seguéd into a deep, thought-provoking musing. Loved It!!!
The sum (outcome) is only as strong as its parts (individuals). (or some such cliché )
Truly, this was a great blog, k-fan. I never really thought about Luke and Vader (Anakin) needing each other to defeat the Dark Side. Luke was stronger than Vader, but let's face it, our favorite farmboy was done for (really now . . . who could resist force lightning?) had it not been Vader stepping in. Gotta give credit where credit is due.
Great to see you around!

Well, a kryptonite blade could probably fend of Supes, but I'm not sure about Bats...

Well, how about if he fakes a knee injury or something, would that help?
Until then, Adam West and I are drawing up plans for a Bat-Lightsaber.
