"I am more powerful then the Chancellor. I can overthrow him." -Anakin
Anakin always thought he was better and more powerful then everyone. And he always wanted
more power. He wanted to obtain control over people through his power. He was never really good at following orders and directions. He always went his own way to benefit himself. So, did he really plan to overthrow him after he "saved" Padme? Or was this just a ploy to get Padme's permission and her "ok" on everything he did? I admitt, it probably was just a ploy, but maybe once Anakin said this, it wasn't such a bad idea in his mind. It would give him the power he always wanted. He would use Palpatine's training to save Padme and then he could control people by acting as emporer. Would he have done this if Padme survived?
"I have brought peace, freedom, security and justice to my new empire" -Anakin
(Sorry if I butchered the line. All I know is that I got the "my empire" part right)
What did he want this to mean to Obi-Wan? This wasn't a ploy to get Obi-Wan to join him because he knew that the Jedi were faithful to the Republic and Obi-Wan would not be lured by more power. So, could the thought of being the emporer have sunk in? Did he really want to overthrow Palpatine after he outlived his purpose?
So, he fights Obi-Wan, loses a few limbs, gets put back together again and finds out Padme is dead. Did he still have the idea of being emporer. I'm sure, after knowing he would live, the idea of that power would seem a pretty nice way to get revenge on his old master. Now, after finding that his beloved is dead, Palpatine no longer has a purpose. He no longer needs Palpatine's knowledge to save Padme. He really didn't any training Palpatine could offer, and he knew that. He knew he was a great warrior and he had a wide knowledge of the force. If he still believed Palpatine had the power to save people, that is the only power he didn't have. Yet now he had no one to save. He would not save innocent lives that he did not know because (as discussed in many blogs) he uses all of his powers selfishly. All of his powers went to serving himself.
Everything is gone, except Palpatine and his power in the galaxy. The power Palpatine had is the power Anakin/Darth Vader he was sure he could obtain. Did he really want that power. And if he wanted that power, why not overthrow Palpatine? Why not take his power and become the emporer? Did he finally come to his senses and realize that Palpatine is a very powerful Sith Lord and would not be easy to overthrow? He always followed orders with reluctance (if he followed them at all) so why follow them now? Why listen to this man who did nothing for you, who lied to you? Why not go your own way and gain power a different way? He didn't need to go back to the light. He could still say an evil Sith, but he did not have to follow Palpatine.
He never obtained the full power he wanted: The power to save his loved ones and ultimately be the "most powerfull Jedi/Sith ever". Staying at Palpatine's side, he would never be number one, he would always be number two. Did he stay by his side because he thought, if he "betrayed" Palpatine, he would have to fight him? Is it possible he didn't want to fight Palpatine/Sidious? Did he not want to be the "middle-man", not being on the Rebellion's side and not being on Palpatine's/Empire's side? Did he stay the way he was for so many years because he was afraind of losing his power, even if it be not as much as he wanted?
I think he was stuck in the middle. The middle of the power he already had, and the power he wanted. The thought of losing his power, and the thought of being the most powerful man in the galaxy. This debate was constantly on his mind, constantly ripping him apart. That is why I think he didn't go for power, and stayed at Palpatine's and the Empire's side for so long. He didn't want to be stuck in the middle with no power at all. He knew what it felt like to have no power over your life, to have no control over your actions, to be a "low-life". After he became a Jedi, he slowly gained the power he had been deprived of for so long.
"Everyone who gains power, is afraid to lose it." -Palpatine
Now being so close to the power he had always wanted, he is paralyzed at the thought of losing his already obtained power. Palpatine is right, everyone who has power is afraid to lose it, especially Anakin. Being a slave, having no life, scarred him. It left an impression on him. I do not think Palpatine was afraid of mutiny beacause he knows Anakin would not risk not having power. Power was too precious to him. In my opinion, the thought of power kept Anakin going when he was a slave. The power to escape, the power to free the slaves, the power to be someting better. It always kept him going. He never stopped to think what he was doing beacause before he did it, he thought it would gain him power. That's all he ever wanted.
POWER Maybe for a Sith, the thought of power is the equivalent of hope. It just keeps them going and going.
POWER
