How Qui-Gon differs from the prequel era Jedi...and the rest of the new issue of the
Saga Journal.
I am something of a Qui-Gon cheerleader.
This is evident from the paper I've just written for the
Saga Journal's new June issue,
Following the Will of the Force: Qui-Gon Jinn as Maverick. Although he only appears in one movie out of six (with significant mentions in two others), Qui-Gon to me is a crucial character to the saga for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being how he seems to be set apart from the other prequel era Jedi.
Qui-Gon doesn't set much store by the rules or the Code. He isn't worried about whether or not his beliefs and actions have cost him a seat on the Council. He is an adherent of the Living Force, when most other Jedi focus on the Universal. Listening to and following the Will of the Force is his priority. He is open to and ready to deal with whatever comes his way, including rather extraordinary things like the prophesied Chosen One or the newly emergent Sith. He is moral (depsite -- or perhaps sometimes because of? -- his penchant for bending and breaking rules) and treats others with kindness and respect. In my opinion, he was the best potential Master for Anakin given the other prequel Jedi we've seen, and his death was likely the main root cause -- of many different causes -- that eventually led to Anakin's fall (I've discussed that in a previous
blog entry).
Wow, that really
does sound like cheerleading.
The paper at the
Saga Journal is about the ways that Qui-Gon fits the maverick character type. The June issue also includes a second
paper on the importance of masks in the saga, by
Matril, and a new Discovering
Star Wars story.
