 | Darth America? |
It's a truly awesome opportunity that Lucasfilm is giving Star Wars fans -- a chance to give Jacen Solo his Sith name: Darth ______. See this page for details and submission form.
After getting quite excited and emailing the link to all my fellow Star Wars fans here in Australia, I go back to read the dreaded Fine Print (TM), to find that the competition is only for residents of the USA.
I'm expecting the usual response of "for legal reasons". If Lucasfilm can legally make millions of dollars in profit from its international fan base, employ authors from outside of the USA, and film the saga in other countries, then why can't it also extend this invitation to name a Sith Lord internationally?
Just a thought.

I don't know why they cannot do it internationally, and there is no cash reward for being the winner. Even still, I took the chance.

For what it's worth, it's almost always the laws of the restricted territory that tend to force the issue, not the laws of the territory where the contest originates.

...The other one that bothers is me that you have to be 18 or older to participate. I'm so close... And I don't understand why registered members can't all participate. If you're old enough to agree to the terms of use for the website, aren't you old enough to agree to the rules of the contest?

Can't someone just save Jacen Solo from himself so he doesn't NEED a Darth name? Naw, that's too easy...

that is a shame...
I already submitted my entry, although I wont reveal it here...dont want to JINX it, lol.
I was going to mull it over awhile but after checking out a dictionary and looking through a few symonyms I found the PERFECT name for Jacen's situation....
To all who enter though: Good luck, and MTFBWY.

Yeah, it feels like we international fans miss out on a lot. I was also hoping to submit something before I noticed that only American citizens can enter. I'm very disappointed, because in the light of Celebration Europe, it looked like more was being done for the international fans.
For what it's worth, it's almost always the laws of the restricted territory that tend to force the issue, not the laws of the territory where the contest originates.
But wouldn't the same apply to What's The Story?. These two contests are pretty similar. One you submit a backstory for an SW character and the other is giving someone a Darth name. Why is participation in one hindered by legal mumbo-jumbo but not in the other?

Good point, it just doesn't add up. This occured to me earlier, but I didn't want to mention it. Imagine if they now decided to make What's The Story? a USA-only competition too... I think I would cry.

Could one of the moderators answer why anyone out of the usa cant enter, If there was a genuine answer and we could see it was out of their control i would be ok. but at the moment it just looks like we get left out again for no reason.

Well Pablo (Pabawan) gave a small explanation above, but I'm not convinced...
And a mod on the forums said:
"Gamboling laws, same reason those under 18 can't participate". Very helpful.

I wish someone from the site or Karen Traviss could explain why.
Worth mentioning, but Karen Traviss couldn't enter this competition as, like myself, she is from the UK.
Really need to get things like this sorted out. It's the same as not being able to get The Insider in the UK and Europe - frustrating, especially as for many years we were able to get Bantha Tracks, the LFL mag and early Insiders.

Oh, and I entered too, didn't even realise that. But PH is right, it's out of LFL's hands, which is why things need to be looked at, this is a truly global franchise. I mean, on this page you have Arf Maul from Oz, me from England and a whole bunch from the States, as well as folks from other countries. We have our own UN here (except this one actually works), and it would be great for us all to be able to enter.

One requires purchase to enter, which slots it into an entirely different category. One is an ongoing subset benefit of subscription, while the other is a one-time sweepstakes with a specific window. One is an entirely Lucasfilm venture, while the other is a Del Rey one, which brings different contest lawyers, states, and interpretations into the mix.
It's a wonder anyone does contests at all, really.

Sorry about the rant. I really am grateful for this opportunity that Del Rey has given to the fans; it really is the coolest contest ever. I wish good luck upon those who are eligible to participate.

Hasn't ANYBODY thought of Darth Jacen? Or Darth Solo?
Or maybe a homage to his sister or brother: Darth Jaina, Darth Anakin
Or maybe even to his parents: Darth Han, Darth Leia
OR MAYBE HIS FAVOURITE TV SHOW!!! Darth Simpsons
    I feel evil!
