Here is almost everything that happened to me and my dad at Celebration 4 on Day 1 of our fabulous adventure. Tomorrow I'll try to have all of the pictures uploaded. I know it's almost two months late but here it is. Friday (Day 2) should be up in about two or three weeks.
I hope you like it.
Celebration 4 Day 1 Thursday, May 24, 2007
4:30AM-3:30PM
I groggily climb out of bed at 4:30am on a school day. Annoyed I wonder why in the world I'm up so early. Then it dawns on me. I'm going to Star Wars Celebration IV in LA! I run downstairs and eat as fast as humanly possible. My dad and I grab everything and leave the house at 5:15am destined for PDX airport. But of course I misplaced my toothbrush.
Since my dad was smart enough to make the bags all carry-on we were able to skip the first two baggage lines saving us about an hour. Then we went through security and I haphazardly shoved my stuff into the plastic tray. We were in such a hurry I almost forgot my boarding pass in the little plastic tray.
Sprinting we headed to Gate E3 and waited from about 6:35 to 7:30. Durring this time I kept wishing and withing that we could be on the plane and to have no accidents. My friends and I had a joke that if the plane was hijacked on the way to LA I would personally stop the attackers and single-handedly fly the plane to safety right outside the convention center. When the plane landed we had to wait for ten excruciating minute to get off the plane. Luckily we didn't have to pick up any baggage and headed strait for the shuttle buses.
While in line we met a woman who worked as a volunteer for Official Pix. She said that she had also worked at C3. My dad asked her questions about what it was like volunteering and now I think we'll do it next time. The other person in line was a man who was in the 501st and had stormtrooper armor. We talked with him about what it was like being in the 501st and it sounds pretty cool. When the blue Super Shuttle arrived we had this hilarious fiasco were no one could figure out how many people were getting on. There was room for three more people and so we all got in and the man in stormtrooper armor climbed in the front where the diver didn't notice him. We talked to a man and his wife from Florida who were both great people. We began a conversation about Star Wars costumes. We laughed and another lady with her daughter joined in the conversation. We got to the hotel, the Los Angeles Athletic Club, and met two people (Married maybe?) when the man noticed my C3 bracelet. It turns out that they go to U of O in Oregon and they asked how they missed us on the plane, since we probably were on the same flight. Everyone at the hotel seemed to be going to C4. Even the Conséir Brian was going to C4 on Friday. He mentioned that he would be looking for an old Star Wars mug. I think he mentioned it having Boba Fett's face on it.
We had our baggage taken to a secure room because we didn't have a room key yet. But before they took our luggage we moved it and left Jeremy Bulloch's book in the blue bag.
We left and saw some very, very strange people on the eight blocks to C4. One lady was standing in the middle of the sidewalk with her shirt off and scratching her back and she had scabs all over her face and body. My dad pointed her out and we both think that she was on meth. We actually saw her every dad except for Friday, (I think).
When we were at the convention we got mixed up in the lines. We went to the will call and got our goodie bag then waited for about an hour in the general entry line under the bridge/building. Once inside I dragged my dad along to the Halls HJ but we first got a picture at the Darth Vader poster.
Walked through back area under walkway to R2-D2 Builders room, near cafeteria. We saw BBQ place and Hawaiian drinks place with other food vendors. We planned on coming back and getting a BBQ steak but never even came back to that area again. As we walked into the Cafeteria area there were two security (and I use the term loosely) people stopped the group around us. Many of which were tattooed. We got in but I was confused as to why. Later I realized it was because of our orange Hyperspace lanyards.
Once at Hall HJ we went to the back and
got in line to buy autograph coupons. We got tickets for Anthony Daniels, Jeremy Bulloch and Amy Allen, which my dad insisted that we absolutely had to have. First we looked around for Anthony Daniels and the special Masterpix pictures when we finally figured out that they were at his booth, which was behind the other booths. As we were searching we came across someone dressed like Darth Talon who was a volunteer. We asked for directions to the Masterpix and
I got a picture with her. We waited in line for about 30 minutes with these two guys from the 501st who volunteered for official pix. They both had their own Gentle Giant and Master Replicas exclusives. Dad tried to take videos of Anthony Daniels but the Official Pix volunteers with Mr. Daniels, (not the guys in line) said "No" because of "Intellectual Property." I laughed and the guy supervising the line said something about his website and fake autographs that I knew about that. We talked about how he slams the fakes on his website. I picked out an Episode IV(4) picture because I thought it appropriate to commemorate the 30th year anniversary.
When we got to Mr. Daniels I was so nervous that I put the photo upside down. He smiled and in the most serious voice said, "You put it upside down." I hastily said sorry and righted the error. He laughed and said that I was just nervous to meet such a famous actor who played C-3PO. I was so exited that I forgot to ask him why he held onto his characters voice so dearly. He said to say "hi" to Troy Alders when Dad did a name drop and mentioned that I was an artist. Then Mr. Daniels said to see the Ralph McQuarrie booth and pick up a copy of his book, The Art of Ralph McQuarrie. He also mentioned that he had a part in the book and without Ralph he wouldn't have been C-3PO. I told him that I had it pre-ordered and to get his signature in the book it would've cost $700. He looked amazed and leaned in towards me, gave that little 'Anthony Daniels smile' and whispered, "I think I'm getting one for free."
I got my picture taken with him and we had to stand on certain tape "X's" for good photos. I thanked him and we were on our way.
We went to Drew Struzan's booth but he was delayed for a while. For about an hour we walked around aimlessly going to Acme Archives and the Hasbro line. We walked over to the poster booth and thought about getting a poster for Drew to sign. I decided against it and so we bought an extra poster tube. We then turned around and went to the Dark Horse booth and for some reason I really didn't want to talk to Randy Stradley about getting an internship. Throughout the convention I had these weird urges not to bother important people. But thank got for my dad who's too ambitious to let me get of meeting people. We waited until "later" to talk with Randy. We did however pick up a copy of Dark Times #3 which I had a letter comment in. Check under Jacob Niebs-.
