So uncivilized!
I can't decide if this is extremely cool or extremely scary. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is developing their very own turbolaser called HELLADS.

Story on Technovelgy.com

On the one hand, I have a rather geeky inclination to do a little happy dance and go on and on about how cool this is. On the other hand, though, I can't help but wonder at humanity's penchant for coming up with new and better ways to destroy itself. I can only hope that once they're done with this little project they might consider working on something a little more elegant -- a lightsaber, mayhaps? :)

i agree with you, The Wroshyr Tree, in some ways it's cool to see some Sci-Fi turning into reality.

but then you realize what it really means to zap someone with a laser in real life!

The laser your talking about is going to be used to shoot down missles not shoot people. It is purely defensive, made to protect the United States. with North Korea developing Nuclear Weapons it doesn't look like a bad idea either.

Well, they could be claiming for it to be defensive...whilst they develop the death star...

That may be the intention now, but things change. Part of the innovation of HELLADS over MTHEL is it's smaller size and mobility. How long before they start coming out with a personal sized one? And who says the aircraft-mounted HELLADS will always be used just to shoot down missiles? Forgive me, but with Emperor Bush and Darth Cheney holding the reins, I'm not sure how far I trust that motivation right now.
