I was reading someone else's blog today when I came across a thought that permeates all manner of our world: we can't spell.
Not the royal "we." Humans. All of us. "Every single
one of them."
This is not to say anything bad against the blogger whose entry I was reading, but the entry was about spelling. More specifically in a Star Wars messageboard, or some other online community. Look, I know the Internet has made us stupider, despite its mass of information and spread of knowledge. But this person was discussing common spelling errors, which I laud them for. However, during this discussion, the person made a spelling error.
Now, I love me some irony. Not Alanis irony (which is really nothing more than a bad coincidence), I'm talking irony that can kill a man because he's trying to save his own life. You know, Anakin-turns-to-the-dark-side-so-he-can-save-his-wife-from-dying-which-kills-her-in-the-process kind of irony. Dramatic irony.
And in the case of admonishing the online world for our grievous use of the English language, misspelling a word in the process is just deliciously ironic. I know this person didn't mean it, and if they discovered it I'm sure they would laugh and curse themselves for doing it. That right there separates those that don't care how to use the language they've known from birth and zealots like myself.
I guess I'm one of the few that thinks about an apostrophe. I-T-S has lots of uses in our silly little vernacular, and it does take some thought to try and get it right. But why can't we think a little more about it? Why can't we use the true nature of the word "proofread" and not think about it like a breakfast cereal?
At least try. I'm going to go above the little green master on this one and say "No, there is no concrete doing. It's hard, fine. But please try. Try, and if doing works for you than great."
Not just online. In emails. In conversation (yeah, use of our language extends to how we say it, too). In physical notes. Just try.
Now excuse me while I go find out how many things I misspelled in this blog.
