 | Breaking the Blog Jam |
Something I think many have noticed about blogging is there occasionally is a "Blog Jam" at the top.
Sometimes we end up seeing the same names over and over, which is a testament to good and frequent blogging...but what of the unsung bloggers?
We all know there are excellent blogs that never seem to make it past the second page (past what I refer to as the "FTL barrier"...what yon sailors of olde called "Ye Grayt Footloose! Reefe" where thar be monsters and such, arrr..).
I think its reasonable to assume that its a sort of chain reaction. We get used to clicking on our favorites, and therefore they are always in a position to be seen. It's how popular blogs become even more popular, but its also how less seen, or perhaps new bloggers on the scene, have to work harder to develop a readership.
And that's rather like how this whole enterprise works. The analogy has been made more than a few times, often by yours truly, that wrtining your blog can be sort of like publishing your own magazine. Sometimes that magazine is all about you, sometimes its about Star Wars, sometimes its about your job or your pet, or something completely different no one has thought of. And part of the joy and challenge of publishing yourself is developing that core readership, identifying your demographic appeal, or at the very least, finding and holding the attention of folks that "get" your certain point of view.
In the real world, that's a highly competitive process, I'd imagine. Here, it doesn't need to be. I think we should help each other highlight those bloggers we don't often see, or those blogs that are "up and coming" new additions.
Part of that can be done with our own blog rolls.
I have a theory about blog rolls, and it differs a little from some, but mirrors common sense on the subject, too. Blog rolls are the reflection of our tastes, I'll agree. They are the result of our nature to flock together with birds of a feather, and may also demonstrate our admiration for who we aspire to emulate. Nothing wrong there...it is, after all, our blog roll, our own avenue of appreciation and expression of taste.
But one thing about blog rolls: they aren't as allowing for the reality of our diversity. There's 10 slots to our standard blog rolls, and I'd imagine most of us have more than 10 facets to our personal interests. This makes us have to be particularly picky, and likewise, I think it makes our Blog Rolls particularly sticky. They don't change much.
Why? Because people know how hard it is to pick folks for your blog roll. Once they've made the spot, its almost like an obligation.
Have you ever wanted to change your blog roll, but thought "oh wow, if I remove this blogger, they'll notice and think I don't like their blog any more...or worse yet, they'll think I don't like them anymore."
I'd imagine that mindset replicates itself many times over - I know I've thought exactly the same thing. I've been reluctant to change my blog roll sometimes, although I try to change a couple of spots every few months.
I think that, until such time as our blog rolls are given more slots, we can still make them reflect a broader spectrum of our interests, and likewise help each of us highlight new or less known bloggers we really enjoy.
My proposal, then, is for all of us to understand that we'll devote half, 5 spots, to the people we always want on our blog rolls. That can be anyone - favorite VIP's, friends, family, mods, meese, and other myriad mammalia, whathaveyou.
The other 5, which as we know will appear in no particular order, we can resolve to change as often as we like - daily, monthly, hourly - to highlight someone we'd like to bring to the forefront.
That's a positive way to use your blog roll not only to show your personal tastes, but to broaden everyone's horizons as to the many different and intriguing blogs.
On the other side of that, we can start actually paying attention to people's blog rolls. How many times have you looked at someone's blog roll and said "Eh...its the same people, all the time. Who cares." Or worse, we've fallen into that same pattern of name recognition and said "I don't know any of these people...so I'll just ignore it."
Every once in a while, click on a name you don't recognize. If you like their blog, add it to your roll for a little while.
So that's my proposal, and it is in no way mandatory, of course. It's just a suggestion on how to optimize your own blog roll, and increase the interest in others. If they can change, if they can show you blogs you've never seen before, we can all learn about someone new in the Star Wars blog community.
And if we all understand that occasionally our blog rolls will change in this fashion, we don't have to worry about "hurting someone else's feelings". Blog rolls, I think, ideally are not static. They should change, and it doesn't have to do with familiarity or friendships all the time. If we know that going in, fewer would feel slighted by seeing a change in your blog roll. It's what blog rolls do - they roll. If they wanted to call it something that didn't change, they'd call it a blog rock.
But now it can rock, and roll. All day long.
Five for favorites and friends,
Five for finding friends.
Try it out. Pimp the unsung bloggers that you like. Make that stale and sticky blog roll something hot and fresh again. Lemme know what you think.

*crying*
You hath inspired me, o Great Moose of Darkness.
From henceforth, I shall fill my blog roll with all blogs which hath not been seen by the many! I shall stand forth for the unnoticed and unread! If thine is a blog that is beginning, I shall vouch for thee before the masses! A knight who standeth tall in the face of adversity and critical readers! I shall rise up and defend thee!
Thank you, O' Moose! I pray that ye give me the strength I shall need to carry out this quest!
I am... Blog Quixote! (ten points to anyone who caught that reference)

I'm game.
Hopefully we can get enough bloggers to dip their toes into the warm waters of rolling blogs, and then some rare nuggets of joy will be unearthed.
Either that, or some new stuff.

I'm very inspired DM. I like your suggestion. Myself being a new blogger here once, I remember hoping I might get a comment. Comments aren't the reason we blog, but we must all admit they are nice. The relationships and finding good writers from comments is even nicer.
I like your proposal, but since I'm your loyal subject (referring to the DM as Emporer) I will of course obey and eat Doritos while doing so.

I'm pretty proud of the fact that I hit the topics that look interesting. Sure, there are a few names I look for, as well, but I don't have any issues reading things from people I've never noticed before then....
I use my blog roll as a way to list a few blogs that I frequently check older entries, and it's just a faster way for me to find them. But that's just me....

Personally, I don't put any VIP's on my blog roll, since I click on the VIP group first thing every time I visit the blogs. That's sort of my VIP blog roll all on it's own.
Cool suggestion DM.

Defintiely not everyone uses their blog roll in the same way - some use it as their own navigation tool, some use it as an assosiative reference, some use it as a means to advertise blogs they like. So it might not work for everyone, but for those that want to use it to show off different blogs, this might be an option...

only problem here is that too few people look at my blogs to begin with!
unfortunately
however, i do like reading newer bloggers blogs, and i think your idea is a good one, but not an overly practical one
i read my blog roll blogs, but also anything with a good title when i am on, at least if it is still there on the page

i do that too, certainly easier, since i am not always on, and i don't want to miss something
or i might put someone there as a little reminder to myself to read something of theirs

I do use my blog roll as an index of sorts; I never thought of it as an advertisement. Additionally, I don't really look into the blog rolls of other authors. I assume that is their personal index for whatever reason they've chosen. As for Mods and VIPs, their names are easily spotted whether on a 'roll' or not. Having said that, I do have a regular habit of hitting on the links of those with interesting comments - be it in my blog or someone else's...

...Finally, there are so many blogs I am always open to being 'tapped on the shoulder' for a comment or two via a friendly email - I really am (some have even taken me up on this). It's easy to miss great blogs in this environment and I apologize for doing so. Given what you've said, I will definitely consider your suggestion, Moose.
As always, I'm grateful that mine is visited as much as it is - Thank you, everybody!

I have a different way of doing blog rolls. As a non hyperspace member, I cannot store them, so I made a folder in my favorites and store the main page of the blogs there. I look at them first, and then go to the main site and look at the titles and descriptions to see if they are interesting. If they are I read, and comment. Just thought I'd pass on that tip....

If you're referring to this blog - the Blue Mod Group, obviously that is hard-coded - multiblog blog rolls are automatically comprised of those bloggers that are members of that group - no way to change it.
My own personal blog is rather diverse in color choice - reds, greens, blues - Lucky Charms ain't got nuttin on me.

Just to add - the "five friends" don't have to stay the same either. Rotate 'em.
Anyway- I've already been doing something similar. Sometimes I'll see an entry that really strikes me, and I'll add my own personal feature blog. Trying to keep it mixed up a bit too. Can I have a glazed and a jelly filled too?

Great idea, Moose. I rarely use my blog role as an index anyway -- I'm around often enough to look through the recent blogs and not miss too much. And ten spots isn't enough for an index to every blog I want to read, anyway.
Stooge had a cool idea with the themed blog roll. I will stick with the five and five (or perhaps the seven and three ). Time to switch it up!

Since I'm not a member, all I have to say is that I go to all my favorite catagories first and look at all of the blogs on the first page, and mostly respond to all. Also, no offence, but Moose, do you ever blog about something other than stuff that has to do with your moding duties?

I try to keep adding to my blog roll (it's in a blog entry) on a regular basis, but you've reminded me to update it. I've gotten to the point that I rarely use it, though. I prefer to read through the subjects and see what I like. It's so easy to miss good ones...I hate when that happens!

interesting ideas, as always.
If I might add a suggestion:
Many folks it seems have their blog rolls loaded up with the VIP's.
There is nothing WRONG with this, especially if you enjoy reading those VIP's blogs, BUT it seems to me that VIP blogs are easy to find as they even have their own link that readers can click to search for the most recent blog by their favorite VIP.
So my suggestion would be: If your blog roll is FULL of VIP's, perhaps a change is in order.
Remove a few VIP's from the blog roll and add a few regular fans to your list.
I dont think the VIP's would be insulted by that. Again, they already have that special link that directs fans towards their blogs anyway.

True - I've done this myself, and it's never a bad idea to rotate in new VIP's that interest you along with the regular fans that you want to show on your blog roll.
Like I say, personally for me some will always be there, but some will rotate through. Whoever you take off of your blog roll, you can always put back on later.

DM, sounds like an excellent idea. However, I must admit I do not really know to what you're referring (is that the list on the left?). After months and months and months of enjoying reading other fans' blogs, and commenting on most of them, I am in the process of trying to set up my own blog to post my own thoughts. Unfortunately, there appears to be something wrong with the "virtual folder" (I think you're aware of this situation).
Anyway, I can say I have enjoyed every fans' blog that I have read - from those whose names I recognize to those who are less well-known. It's always a treat to "hear" what other fans have to say about the world of SW, and their own worlds, too!

I know how difficult it is to get yourself "out there" as a beginning blogger. There's definitely nothing wrong with having a "blog circle" (I've made some great new friends this way!!! ), but I totally agree that we ALL need to branch-out. An off shoot of this topic:
I know the bloggers are encouraged NOT to blog ONLY for responses...its not what blogging is supposed to be about.
BUT....it is nice to know yoru blog was read by SOMEBODY.
I try my best to post a response on every blog I read, even if I have nothing really to add, but just to say "Hey, I read your blog."
It can be diheartening especially for newer bloggers to post something and watch it slip away to the back pages with zero feedback fro other bloggers.
So if you took the time to read someones blog, take a few more seconds and respond, if onlyto let the KNOW you read it.
Just one bloggers opinion, of course...

Great advice, DM. I used to check out newer bloggers more frequently than I have been the last few months. I really do need to make the time to check them out and give 'em the attention they deserve. I do rotate my blog roll on a regular basis... I have so many favorites, i want to give 'em a fair shake on my roll. I know I've been on some only to be removed later. It's nothing personal and no one should ever take it that way.
