Its been a long time since I played that game. I think what you are referring to are in game accomplishments. For example, if you kill a number of enemies in a row with a particular weapon without dying, you'll get an accomplishment in your award screen and a temporary power-up in game.

I'd suggest that you go to the forums with your inquiry. You'll likely get better advice there.

You gain points for killing enemies and capturing flags. You lose points for dying.

1 point for killing a comp player
2 points for killing a human player (im pretty sure)
2 points for capturing a command post after it had been partially charged up
5 points for capturing a command post
1 point for picking up a flag (it gets confusing because it adds 2 then subtracts 1)
10 points for capturing a flag

The award you get from killing a certain amount of people with a certain weapon or getting to a certain amount of points. After getting the award a certain amount of times, the game reduces the requirements or gives the award from the start. All the awards have some sort of upgraded effect.

For example:
If you get 12 pistol kills in one life, you get the precision pistol, which has a scope and does more damage. After you get the award around 40 times, the number of kills required to get the award goes down to 6. When you get around 60, it gives you the precision pistol as soon as you spawn.
