Where are you on The Geek Hierarchy?
I'm proud to be a geek. Ever since I got my first rock tumbling kit and programmed BASIC challenges located in the back of Ranger Rick magazine, I knew I was not going to be like the "other" kids.

I grew up watching Star Wars, "Doctor Who," "Star Trek," "Battlestar Galactica," "G-Force," "Battle of the Planets" and "Red Dwarf." And half of my Halloween costumes reflected that. I had my tween first kiss over a game of Dungeons & Dragons. My first date was seeing War Games. And my first thrill of winning came from a Ms. Pac-Man tournament. Heck, my college boyfriend took me to a 2600 Meeting on our first date.

So yeah, I'm a geek.

And when I found out about this graph, I couldn't help but wonder where exactly did I fall?

The Geek Hierarchy

I look at that grid see myself everywhere. Sure I'm an anime fan who needs subtitles, but I'm also a fan fic writer. And I'm obviously a comic book fan, but does that make me less geeky than admitting I'm vaguely connected to the SCA? (And by vaguely I mean I once dated a guy who designed chainmail dresses for the women who attended their elaborate war re-enactments. Okay, who am I kidding? -- I wore those dresses!)

Oddly enough Star Wars isn't mentioned by name on that grid. Unlike Trekkies, we have more than one of our own language -- Mando'a AND Huttese. But that's not listed as geeky. Maybe because it's too cool to be compared to Klingon. Right?

So as you look at the Geek Hierarchy, see how many times you could be listed and take into account, you're not alone. Not by a longshot!

OMG - G-Force? Did you say G-FORCE?? Now, thats a name I have not heard in.... I love that show. Tell me you watched Star Blazers too. Go ahead, even if it's a lie.

Okay - I admit it. I'm all around the grid too, or have been in the past. And even though I've never been too connected to the LARPIES or the SCA, I can appreciate a nice period costume. Females have it a little easier when it comes to being geeky too.

Maybe because it's too cool to be compared to Klingon. Right?

I've been a geek since the Original Star Trek came out... actually, before that The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was pretty geeky in it's day... cool gadgets and all...

I'm not sure I should mention the 8th grade Science Fair...

Ever since I got my first rock tumbling kit

My Dad used to do rock stuff... I thought it was so cool... we used to hunt the beaches...

I won't try to find my self on the Geek Hierarchy... I don't like the idea that geeks should be judging other geeks... after all, we will inherit the earth... or rather, you young geeks will...

I suppose I should feel grateful that, including both current and abandoned geekdoms, I match only eight of the boxes on that chart...
