When I wasn't hanging out with the 501st during march practice at the local Pasadena high school football field, I was running errands with our LFL publicity and marketing team helping any way I could. This included Press Day with George Lucas.
Now, I've attended numerous press events over the years I've been at Lucasfilm -- most notably, our press events for the release of Episode III was probably the largest of the bunch. I've sat with the press at roundtable discussions with the likes of Rick McCallum, Hayden Christensen, Rob Coleman and of course George Lucas. In fact, if you watch the
webcam movie for the Ep. III Press Junket, you can see me asking probing questions just like all the other reporters. I also sat in on the press during the Pasadena Grand Marshal announcement as well trying to get a few great quotes as George chatted with local, national and international press.
As I looked down the list of journalists arriving that day, I spotted a name I recognized -- Leonard Maltin. The film critic and film historian is probably one of the most prolific movie fans in the entertainment industry today. Heck, I remember reading his book
Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide cover to cover. But currently Maltin can be seen giving his latest movie reviews and interviewing actors and directors on
Entertainment Tonight.
When he showed up to interview George, he couldn't be a nicer guy. He shook our hands and with a big smile asked us for one of those
cool collector's Rose Parade pins we brought just in case the journalists happened to be big
Star Wars fans (which turned out to be the case with all of them).
As soon as Maltin sat down to look over our press kits, a familiar face came up to me and said, "Are you bonniegrrl?" I had a feeling I knew this guy but I couldn't quite place him. He was with Maltin, working as a director of the video interview for ET, and he wore one of those nice Entertainment Tonight staff jackets, so I figured I must have met him in 2005 for a press junket at Skywalker.
"It's me, The Stooge!" he smiled.
And it clicked. He was one of our most ardent bloggers on starwars.com who I recently profiled here:
Featured Blog: Star Wars Joke-A-Day. The Stooge posts daily
Star Wars jokes and keeps us all laughing on a regular basis on his blog. Oh, THAT guy!
I gave him a big hug and we chatted briefly about starwars.com and the Rose Parade and before I knew it he had to go into the interview room to meet George with Maltin. When he left we made sure to give him a pin and tell him to blog all about his day. And sure enough he did. And I'm flattered he called it:
I Met Bonniegrrl!
Thanks Stooge!
