MythBusters Talk Star Wars
In my ongoing series Star Wars Rocks on starwars.com where I interview bands and celebs who adore Star Wars, I have to say I was pretty excited to interview the hosts of one of my favorite shows on the Discovery Channel -- "Mythbusters."

I chatted with hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, as well as members of their build team Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci about their days working for Industrial Light & Magic, close calls on the show, the ultimate myths to break and of course, a few Star Wars myths that needed to be set straight once and for all.

----------------------------------------

Here's a sample from the article:

Could you survive a 50-foot fall into a snow bank like Luke Skywalker did?
"It's plausible, depending on the exact conditions," Imahara explains. "You could survive, but you'd be pretty badly hurt. Let's just say you probably wouldn't be jumping up on a tauntaun and riding to the next outpost, if you know what I mean."

"Actually, a couple of people have survived falls from thousands of feet into snow banks," Savage says. "So, yes."

"Definitely, I did it once snowboarding," Belleci says. "Okay, maybe it wasn't a 50-foot fall, but it WAS high."

I just read that yesterday, it was great. Mythbusters is probably my favorite show on television, I had no idea the guys worked for ILM, or that they were fans..............hope they can get to those SW myths soon!

I hope to never fall, let alone from 50-feet, and certainly not without the Force backing me up, but having said that, I too am a huge fan of Mythbusters and had no idea of their connection to ILM - not that it mattered, they still have a great show! Thanks for the update.

Funny thing that I spotted this news item just today.

Proves that with a bit of luck, 50 feet into the snow would be a breeze. And luck is just another word for the force in the GFFA as we all know...

Hi Bonnie! :)

Regarding the 50-ft. fall: In Luke's case, his facility with the force must be taken into consideration.

Looking at a similar situation in reverse: When Lord Maul kicked Obi Wan off the beam in the Maul/Obi/Qui Gon conflict, Obi Wan jumped back onto the beam where Qui Gon and Maul were still fighting.

Could you jump as high as Obi Wan did? If you're a Jedi, perhaps. But your average individual couldn't jump like that...and if they were to survive a 50-ft. fall, it would be truly be a happy miracle! :)

Very truly yours,
-jeditee :)

Excellent article, Bonnie. As for surviving such a fall, I jumped 30 feet into a mound of snow and was only slightly injured. Sure, 50-feet is a bit more than that but I am sure it is survivable. It all depends on how you land and what part of your body takes the most impact damage. Usually, when people die from falling, they suffer major head or neck trauma. If you somehow avoid that and do not liquify your internals (say, from a high-speed impact) then you should survive.

People have survived falls of hundreds and thousands of feet with minor injuries based on how they landed. Soft snow would seem like the perfect thing to impact with from great heights. :)
