The Lying Game
This week is dedicated to a couple of our favorite bloggers, K-Fan, it's good to see you back on the blogs, and jkthunder, happy birthday for yesterday!

Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

Poor old Ben. He takes a lot of flak for not being entirely honest with young Luke, however I'm not here to throw stones at him, but to defend his actions - after all, without a few untruths, the world would be a tougher place to live in.

If I was to stand and poke Obi Wan with the dirty stick of morality, I could only do so if I was pure as the driven snow, and I'm not. I've told lies. I've also told fibs, embellished a story, told tall tales and twisted the truth.
I am human, I was once a child, and I am multi-layered. Like an onion.
But with legs.

Now, before anyone starts praying for me, don't get me wrong. I'm not a bad person. I wish no ill upon any fellow human, and would never maliciously lie in order to hurt someone or to break the law, but when I sat down to consider Obi Wan's half-truths, I realized that sometimes, not being completely honest is the best policy.

nob01's greatest lies #1
When I was around 8 or 9, I had nothing for show and tell, so I told the class that my dad had tripped over a book and fallen out of a 6th floor window, and was now in hospital in traction. This earned me some cool points with the other kids.
Unfortunately, when I got home, mum wanted to know why her friends had been phoning to find out how her husband was doing. I was rumbled.

I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it.

Now this one is not an embellishment, nor is it a lie. Obi Wan is speaking hypothetically at this point. Had Anakin not turned to the dark side, had he not been left for dead by Obi Wan, and had he lived a peaceful life with his wife and children, then it is very possible that he would indeed have wanted his son (or daughter for that matter) to have his lightsaber. Obi Wan was merely speculating at this point, but he phrased it in such a way that Luke would want to take it; would want to learn the ways of the force, like his father.
So, a half-truth, but a beneficial one, for without Ben's sneaky wordplay, the Emperor would still be standing and the Rebellion crushed.
See? There's a tougher world to live in right there.

nob01's greatest lies #2
I once told a friend that my family went on a holiday to Wales, and that we ate the inside of trees which tasted like chicken (hey, it looks like chicken).
He asked my mum about this. Rumbled.

A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father.

Here is the doozy that gets Ben in trouble. To many of us watching the saga unfold so many years ago, this seemed to be the ultimate fib. Not only that, but it shook our very foundations when Vader declared his dad-ship to Luke in ESB.
Wait! Vader is his father? Wait? Ben lied? What next? Is Leia his sister?
Conveniently, old Ben knows he has his 'get out of jail free' card in his pocket, more commonly known as his 'from a certain point of view' card.

"Well, I trained your father to the best of my abilities but he was lured by the dark side of the Force and became evil. He murdered children and innocents and killed your mother. I thought I had killed him but he lives on as a twisted and tortured half-machine, hell-bent on dominating the universe through terror and destruction. That's what happened to your father. Now, I'd like to try training you so that you can face him and kill him."

See? Doesn't quite work. I think old Ben made the right choice to play the POV card there.

nob01's greatest lies #3
I once told my class that I was born in an airplane halfway across the North Sea in between Britain and Norway, and that I was now a citizen of both countries.
Someone asked my mum about this.
Are you seeing a pattern here?

My lies were, at the end of the day, lies. But they were not meant to harm anyone - they were intended to create a persona and entertain. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if authors weren't great little liars in their youth. It certainly led to me writing almost every day for most of my 40 years, and it's something I still love (insert shameless blug here). It may also explain why, as a filmmaker, I have no desire to film everyday life. All my projects are outlandish and fantasy-based, embellished to the nth degree.

And these blast points, too accurate for Sandpeople. Only Imperial stormtroopers are so precise.

I think Ben gets a bad rap for this. When he was fighting alongside the clones, they were decidedly more efficient than the barn door-aphobic troops of the latter day Empire, so he could be forgiven for this error of judgment.
On the other hand, he might also have been giving Luke more reason to go after the Empire. Ooh, that sneaky old hermit.

You father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed.
So what I have told you was true... from a certain point of view.

I love this. Ben makes no apologies for his earlier statements. He told Luke what had to be said to get him to seek his path as a Jedi, and ultimately Ben was vindicated. I like to think Luke saw the wisdom in these half-truths as he grew older.

My examples of tall tales, exaggerations, lies, seem to all stem from my childhood, when I was blissfully unaware of the shackles of morality.

However, can I honestly say that I tell the truth all the time now?

I doubt it.

The truth can get you in trouble. Especially in clothes shops with the wife.

I love your wit, nob01. And I love your uncanny wisdom. What a treat to find this wonderful opening to Obi-wan Week!

I, for one, never have been bothered by Obi-wan's comments to Luke. People say things the way they say things for, as you so astutely explain, a myriad of reasons. . .

True, it's a different way of putting it, but Anakin did die when he became Darth Vader.
True, Anakin did not say to Obi-wan, "please take my lightsaber and give it to my child" as Obi-wan turned to leave, but had Anakin been in his right frame of mind, I can see him wanting to leave something to his offspring. What parent wouldn't?

(. . .cont)

Obi-wan wanted to light a flame within Luke's heart. If a little embellishment can do that, why not embellish?

Luke did play a key role in bringing balance to the Force.

Who can argue with that?

See you tomorrow!

Love this entry, nob (and that's not just from a certain point of view)!

I wonder if authors weren't great little liars in their youth

What an interesting thought...

Cheers to you, nob...to K-fan's return...and to JKThunder...HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my dear friend!!! :x

Great start to Obi-Wan week! I agree with JMW, I haven't been bothered by Obi-wan's lies or half-truths to Luke. At the time, that was the only point of view we had, as an audience. Layering in the PT gives his fabrications, in some cases, more depth but we can see how they were meant to protect Luke though his youth ... and subsequently spur him on to fighting against the Empire. Wise Obi-wan was in his careful explanations.

I told the class that my dad had tripped over a book and fallen out of a 6th floor window...

I'm sorry, I can't get past this...its one of those things that's both incredibly sad and terribly funny at the same time. BTW, what was the title of the alleged book? ;)

As far as Ben's lies, I think it says far more about him (and the limitations of the Force) than anything else. Luke was going to be a player in things to come, regardless. However, the manner in which Ben goes about bringing Luke onto the scene, leaves me much to ponder about the issues Ben was still working through himself. Even as a ghost, Ben failed to appreciate the possibilities Luke was still open too.

I think it's interesting that Kenobi gets more grief for 'lying' to Luke (which I don't have any real problem with based on the situation) and not as much grief for mishandling Anakin. In many ways, Kenobi was out of his league when it came to raising the Chosen One. Obi-Wan's own Jedi upbringing didn't prepare him for the most difficult 'fathering' job in the universe. With that said, Obi-Wan did not do a great job and in fact did a subpar job, imo. Who cares about not telling Luke right away that his dad is a psychopath? Kenobi's part in creating that psychopath is a much bigger issue.

Ah Nobby, you are a fascinating individual, you know that?:) Every week, you entertain us with a different character of our beloved Saga. Every week you step up to the challenge and you "bring it" ...your delivery is always amusing and yet, enlightening too. Your entries are always fun for all and yet you walk away from the 'puter with a feeling of contentment, like the feeling you get from a sweet and frothy *Root beer Float*:D satisfaction:)
Ok, maybe not exactly like that, LOL, but one thing for sure....I'm never disappointed that I stopped by to visit your blog, it's always a great pleasure. :x

Awesome entry, Nobby, can't wait to finally meet you next month at the Con!

excellent work nobby.

The truth is sometimes we HAVE to lie. In my line of work, ...telling a bride that looks like the Elephant Man how radiant she looks, or when the best man flubs and stutters around the toast i still say "what a great job, give him a round of applause folks!"...or when someone at karaoke night has just botched a classic so badly I will have nighmares for a week and I have to be nice about it..its my JOB to make people feel good, so sometimes I need "a certain point of view" to do so...

Great entry, master nob01.

I've always found wisdom in Obi Wan's words: "from a certain point of view", It was twisted, but true.

And that thing about the lightsaber, well, If it was hipothetical, he would have used some "would" there, but he just lied :p, Ok, maybe he was not lying, he was just saying "tries"or "liuths", for some good reasons.

May the force be with you master nob01.

P.S. Looking forward to this week's drawings.

Interesting way to start Kenobi week, nobby. Hmm..................seems like lies get one into trouble sooner or later. Although I can see where it may be best to do so. Not that I whole-heartedly agree. One has to be careful so that it doesn't come back to haunt them later. That's hard.
Great entry!

First off, Happy Birthday JK! xoxo

Nobby, I was cracking up at some of your childhood, uh, fibs? LOL

So I thought I'd share one of mine with ya. Here goes....

When I was in the 4th grade (1977) marbles were a big hit with the boys at my school. Being the tomboy I was, I had quite a collection myself and was pretty darn good if I must say so. Toward the end of the school year, my focus toward such things shifted to a certain someone.... Jeff Gonzales.

Sigh... Jeff Gonzales, the coolest kid in the school. So to win his affection I gavc him my marble collection, telling him they were all duplicates. This worked well, I got the boy.... Trouble was, he really wanted to play marbles with me and kept telling me to bring mine to school. What was I to do? There's no way I could come up with an exact duplicate set of one I had given him. Good thing summer came when it did! Ha ha!

Great thoughts on Obi... great blog!

And yet another wonderful tribute to one of our beloved characters :) As Deej said, sometimes telling *half-truths* is better than telling the *real truth*...something I find essential in the every day life of my work (leave the whole-truth-telling to the docs). Obi-Wan did this for very specific reasons...reasons I can understand.

Again...wonderful job. I am truly looking forward to the rest of the week :)

However, I quite enjoyed this blog, partly due to laughing out loud for about a minute straight at your tale about your dad falling out the window.... :D :^O :p

And that thing about the lightsaber, well, If it was hipothetical, he would have used some "would" there, but he just lied

I agree - that one's a lie in my book. If he wanted to actually convey that it was hypothetical, he could have said, "You're father WOULD HAVE wanted you to have this."

What a little fibber. Don't know why I am talking; I pretty much lied through the young years. Are the teen years different? Nope.:^O

Never really thought about the *half truths*. But after your defense I agree to a degree. His intentions were honest and the way he proceeded was, in that situation, very good. But what he wanted as an outcome ( death of Vader) was a little messed up to put on his son. But whatever it takes to save the galaxy. GREAT BLOG!!!
