Turning to the Dork Side # 18
Here you go - enjoy.
Nobby's picks for a tasty Halloween.
#1 in a series of less than 4.
In the run up to Halloween, I shall be using the three Dork Side posts as a sounding board for my ideal Halloween movie nights, depending on your tastes.
It is no secret that I am a huge horror buff, I watch 'em and I make 'em, and so I will use my vast knowledge and astounding good looks to pick a playlist based on a different theme each week.
Of course, there is a good chance that you have seen the films already - but they're good, so watch them again dammit.
This week - hilarious gore-fests.
Your triple bill begins with
Dog Soldiers.
This is Neil Marshall's debut feature before he made
The Descent, and quite honestly you cannot go wrong with the lethal combination of werewolves, sweary British soldiers and Sean Pertwee. Granted, it's not a howler, nor a gutbuster, but there's plenty of that within the film
Next, you watch the first of two New Zealand wonders,
Black Sheep.
This is Jonathan King's directorial debut, and it's a killer. There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand, and they're p***ed off. Genetic tampering creates a strain of killer mutton chops, and even leads to weresheep - you have to see this to believe it - it's great fun!
Finally, round off the night with a kiwi classic,
Brain Dead, AKA in the States as
Dead Alive (which IMO is a rubbish title).
Peter Jackson pulls out all the stops before going on to become a sensible and slightly successful director with the LOTR trilogy. If you've never seen a priest kick arse in the name of the lord, someone eat body parts with their pudding, or witnessed what a lawn mower can do to the undead, then you have to watch this one. Sheer brilliance.
Next week - movies from when Britain ruled the world.
