The downside of YouTube
Girl fights on YouTube - we've all seen them, Kevin and Olivia fawn over them and even my main man Bill Maher doesn't take them seriously - but it when it happens close to home, then you have to start re-evaluating how f***ed up we are becoming as a society.

Some of you may have met my little buddy, Travis, at C IV last year - he's a great kid, and his 14 yr old sister is equally cool - she's a straight A student and a sweetheart to boot.

So, imagine my anger when I heard that yesterday she was attacked by three other girls, while a bunch of punks stood around videoing it on their phones for YouTube.

She was hit on the head from behind and fell to the ground, getting knocked out in the process. That wasn't enough for these little b****es - they proceeded to kick her repeatedly in the head with their boots on - and when a teacher finally intervened (this all happened on campus), the girls started kicking him too.

Travis's sister ended up going to hospital in an ambulance, and she is severely beaten and has lost some hair.

These miserable specimens have picked the wrong victim for their attack though - Travis's dad is a police detective - and soon a huge police force swept into the school, rounding up the girls, confiscating phones and tapes - and they are now in some serious s**t.

Because they kicked her in the head with their boots that is considered a felony - good - I hope they get a f****ing criminal record and are permenantly expelled from that school district - you can guarantee that her dad will bring the full force of his influence down on them and their parents.

All this so that they can load a few seconds of crappy footage on YouTube - why are we fostering this attitude?

I'm not a violent man - but give me a few minutes in a room with those punks and all those who stood and watched, and I'll show them what a f***ing beating really is.

UPDATE

Thank you all for your words of support (I'll pass them along), and I am glad that you are all sensible enough to be similarly outraged.

My apologies for my burst of potty-mouth - it doesn't really belong on these blogs - but I was pretty mad when I wrote it.

Travis's sister (I'll call her 'L' from here on) was released from hospital last night, but had to return today for a second CT scan. No results as of yet, but L is sitting up and talking. The police took photographs of her bruises today - I sincerely hope these kids get the maximum punishment available for juveniles.

The family is pretty distraught and I haven't had a chance to speak to my apprentice, Travis, but I'll try to keep you in the loop - I'll probably give another update next Monday with the Dork Side.

Thanks again!

They attacked the teacher as well? Send these f*ckers to hell!

Damn. It reminds me of the Jackass phenomenon. When all the kids with video cameras tried to repeat the stunts that the trained stuntmen were performing.

Some people upload fake clips of fights, other people upload clips of real fights, and before long kids are creating fights just so they can get their 15 second of internet fame, without considering the consequences. Truly sad.

Wow! Nob01. I think that is the harshest language I have ever from you. You have good reason so it is forgivable.

This kind of thing is getting too common now. As a rule I don't believe in any violence and this criminal behavior of all ages toward others is getting way out of hand. It is one thing for two people who agree to fight each other with some limits but to do it to someone against their will and worse to send them to the hospital from it.

Humans deserve to be able to go through life without fear of what some jack hole creep will do them. Not to be reactionary but I hope they get their deserved punishments. Kids need to think before they do something that will ruin the rest of their lives or that of others. If it happened to Abby I would forget my non violence stance very quickly I think.

I hope Travis' sister will recover well and quickly. My thoughts go out to her.

I'm with you, Nob... I've seen all these things on the news recently and it is insane. These kids are old enough to know better.

Try them as adults and send them to jail. In some cases I think the parents should be held responsible, too. Most kids don't just end up this way... it starts at home with lazy and ignorant parents who never should have had kids in the first place.

I pray Travis' sister recovers fully... and sees some justice done...

I blame parenting, though some people have always been rotten and they just have more technology to exploit it imho.

When i was young there were 4 of us walking down the street and a car with two guys got out who were apparently black belts decided they would use us as practice. They got a little more than they bargained for but the experieince was disheartening to say the least.

Sh*t happens Neil ... not sure why but it does.

I understand your sentiments. I got mad as "heck" when I saw the beating the girl in Lakeland Florida got from 6 of her "friends" and I don't even know the girl. Now you blog about your friend getting beat.

Seems that kids now-a-days have no respect for others and most of the time I blame the parents just as Megatrends said. If one of my kids would have done something like that, my child would do better staying in jail because I would beat the crap out of my kid as soon as I could get my hands on he/she.

You can see...I was raised old-school.

Mindless violence aside, I'm more disappointed in the spectators. I mean dammit kids! These people aren't beating the crap out of this girl for your entertainment! If these retards are so desperate for action, they should just to turn to "professional" wrestling or something. What's also worse are the kids recording it in hopes of making their "E-p****es" bigger. The people who post that BS should have both the video removed and their account permanently banned.

In truth, violence is only cool when it isn't real. Real violence leaves more traumatic effects than you might think.

Exactly. It shouldn't be that hard to follow simple rules/laws and control their hatreds/desires. Kids who inflict violence such as that are making it look almost as if it was actually the Communist Party that won the Cold War. (Before anyone overreacts and accuses me of Commie propaganda, I'll let you know I wasn't saying the Soviet Union won. Besides, the Red Scare ended long ago, so drop it)

I cant beleive these idiots. I'm right beside you on how they should be treated. And beating a teacher? How did that happen? Either these kids need some serious rehab(not the normal kind, the kind where they are handcuffed to a chair in a mental hospital next to someone knitting something that isnt there) or they need to go to jail and be charged as adults without bail. They must have heard about the other beating.

The people who post that BS should have both the video removed and their account permanently banned

i agree.it seems that the younger generation are going haywire...or worse. it is outrageous that these things happen more now than they did decades ago. it sickens me to know that some pre-teens are going out of hand in society. In a way I blame the parents for not setting walls as to what can and cannot be tolerated, and not setting their kids straight instead of spoiling them. as to the treatment, i believe that if they're old enough to think this way,and respond, they are old enough to be treated as adults. or they should be put on some program like hardcore bootcamp or something, somewhat harsh but will do them good.

Wow Nob, I am so sorry! :O I'll definitely be praying for you guys!

This is just sickening. What kind of moron hurts an innocent person just to get a few seconds or minutes of "fame?!" And why on EARTH would you want to be famous for THAT?!?! Really shows how stupid some people are nowadays and how little respect they have for eachother. I definitely agree that the parents are partly to blame. Still, kids always talk about how they want to be treated like adults and how they aren't little kids anymore, so I say, let them. Let them take responsibility. Let them be tried as adults and get adult sentences.

Of course, then they'll just go whining to mommy and daddy that life isn't fair, and some idiot will stand up for them and condone their actions. :| X-( Well, I'm just glad her dad is a police detective so hopefully she has a better chance of getting justice, instead of those freaks just getting a little slap on the hands. And of course knowing that the punishment is small just encourages more crimes like this in the future.

Again, I'll be praying for you all. Let us know how she's recovering. :)

Everyone is going to be remembered for something. It's up to them to decide if they'll be famous...or infamous.

Those kids will be responsible for their own actions, even if their parents haven't raised them well. They can't stand in front of the judge and say, "Wait, it's not my fault I'm an idiot; it's my parents' fault."

There was this thing my county did a while back. Most of the schools sponsored it for a while. It was called the Star program. Basically you had a military guy follow you around everywhere. Up at 5 am in bed at 8 or something. No internet or phone. It was nuts. But it worked. For a while. Then one of the kids went nuts and the state shut it down. It was a wonderful program. It showed the kids that they were worth nothing and showed them harsh reality of what would happen. Unfortunately the kid couldnt be forced into it without parents consent and most of the kids parents didnt care.

Unbelievable! My prayers for the family as well.

I won't presume to be able to diagnose the diseases of a society that leads to children perpetuating violence on each other for entertainment. Such behavior has existed for thousands of years of course, though not so much (I hope) among the young. Perhaps we just haven't been exposed to these horrors.

I work for the DA's office in the juvenile branch and we get cases like these all of the time. There is a bit of copycat phenomenon going on, with kids recording fights and posting them on the internet.

Coming from the prosecution side of things, I can tell you that juveniles with no previous record almost always get probation and little to no jail time aside from detention after they are arrested. The system is designed to rehabilitate kids, not so much to punish them. Personally, I think there should be a bifurcated juvenile system that handles typical kid crimes like shoplifting and minor vandalism separately from violent ones.

In any case, if I were to give advice to your friend's family on how to go about the criminal part of the case, it would be:

1. Cooperate with the cops.

2. Cooperate with the deputy DA/prosecutor. Don't complain about coming to court. Not coming could mean a bench warrant. Defense attorneys COUNT on victims/witnesses not cooperating and not showing up.

3. Don't be surprised if the case ends with an admission/plea bargain, most of them do.

4. Keep copies of all medical records and police reports, and photos if you have them. The court might order restitution, too.

What a travesty. It's hard to believe things like this can really happen. Even scarier to think that bullying has come to what it is today compared to when I was a kid. Do these kids even have parents who watch over them? Mentors? Anyone to look up to (aside from video games and youtube)?

Things like this kind of make the world seem hopeless, but rather than dwell on that I'd like to put my energy, hopes, and compassion towards little L.

Violence is everywhere...on tv, in movies, and in video games. This, in no way, should excuse anyone's behaviors. I hate seeing this happen to anyone...of any age (and I do see it in my work, unfortunately...especially to babies).

I'm glad to hear she is doing better...and I do hope there are no lasting physical effects from this. The mental/emotional effects will stay with her, and I hope they don't cause her too much distress in the future.
