Star Wars Winners in the Annie Awards
On Friday evening the 36th Annual Annie Award ceremony took place - think of it as the animation equivalent of the Oscars.

As a member of ASIFA Hollywood, I got to vote on the nominations (it took 7 hours as you have to watch all the clips - LOL), and I was happy to see that many of my choices received the top honors.

I was sad to see Ben Burtt lose out for voice acting (in WALL-E), but there were some other significant Star Wars winners interspersed between the massive haul of awards (10) that Kung Fu Panda took for the night.

Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II took home the statue for best animated TV production and they also won for writing in an animated TV production. Unfortunately, Kevin Kiner missed out on the gong for best music for an animated TV production (for Clone Wars) - however, Ahmed Best won for best voice acting (again, for Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II, for the excellent 'Gecko' commercial).

On a side note, I was delighted to see Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs take home the award for best animated home entertainment production - awesome!

Fingers crossed for Ben and Matthew for sound design when the Oscars roll around!

Later, kids.

How cool is that! :D I definitely will keep my fingers - and toes! - crossed for our Star Wars favs. I just love, love, love Sound Design . . . and if I could go back to school to study something new and different, that certainly would be it for me! :D

I too have always thought sound design in a film must be fascinating work. I dont think too many people realize that almost every single sound in a film has to be ADDED in post production, from gun shots to foot steps to squeaky floor boards and so on....and in an animated film its EVERY sound, period.

It seems like it could be a fun if complex job to work at.

Very cool! And despite the loss, I think this Ben Burtt fellow may have a future in sound design...

Whoohoo! Very nice! I agree with Stooge. There was a feature on Burtt in an issue of Insider, and I think he's very talented.

Cool stuff...I have no clue about this artsey stuff, but I trust your judgment and if it involves Star Wars folks, all the better. :D And how can you go wrong with Robot Chicken.

Nob, wait till you see what I got you and Melinda...hehe...Which you will get when I come down in a few weeks. :p

I just finished the sound design on my newest film - craziness!

Or possibly editing...

Any clue what was up with the WALL-E shutout?
My guess is that Dreamworks just got rewarded for making a decent film for once.

I agree with Stooge.
You're on your own there.

Oh hey! Thanks for posting this.

It wasn't just a Wall.E shut-out, it was that every category Wall.E was nominated for, was instead won by Kung Fu Panda. Kung Fu Panda is just that much more recent and fresh in our minds, and as far as the voice acting goes - I would have loved to see Burtt take a win also, but how can you compete with the big names of Kung Fu Panda, especially Hoffman. One could argue that Wall.E had much more minimal actual "dialogue" as well, but Burtt's sound engineering was as genius as usual. He just needs his own category, that's all.

Here's a link to the Annie's for the full list of winners BTW :D
