Even though I am the wrong gender to be a part of LILWA (though I guess I could change the first L to Lad, and the A to Amidala), I felt compelled to write a brief introduction to me, inspired by their own bios.
I thought about keeping it brief, but it's tricky, so I'll bare my soul systematically, exactly how FX-9 would do it....
There will be some 'favorite things' lists in here - and if VH1 is anything to go by, lists are what the punters want.
So...
Born in April, '67 - same day as Hitler unfortunately, but also the same as Joan Miro, Harold Lloyd, Ryan O'Neal, Andy Serkis and Carmen Electra, so it's not all bad.
Lots of artists born on this date...it was my destiny.
Born in Ilford, raised in Romford, Essex, UK. Romford's greatest claim to fame - repeated many times in 'Born Slippy' by Underworld (watch Trainspotting again).
Television diet as a child: Dr. Who (Pertwee thru Baker), all Gerry Anderson programs, Hammer House of Horror (liberal parents), Monty Python, Spike Milligan, Benny Hill (etc)
Television I watch now: Not much. Family Guy, Robot Chicken, any great UK comedy (Ali G, Steve Coogan).
Music foisted upon me by my parents (which I loved, and still love): Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, ELO, Queen, Supertramp, Jean Michel Jarre.
Music I listen to now: Hardly anything with real instruments and not a lot of singing. Music, for me, is a soundtrack to my life, so I don't need some singer wailing on about their own.
Particular musical geniuses I love are Yello, Eat Static, Fluke, Portishead, The Orb.
Favorite food: I do all the cooking, and my (chocolate infused) chilli is a dream. Also, you can't beat a good old honest plate of ham, egg and chips.
What do I read? Other than my Insider and Fango subscriptions, I love Tom Robbins (especially Skinny Legs and All) and the Ender series, particularly Ender's Game. I am a colossal fan of short stories too, but I am saving that literary spouting for another blog entry.
Favorite films: Apart from the obvious, anything by Jean Pierre Jeunet, Chan-Wook Park and David Cronenberg.
Saw Star Wars when I was 10 and the world turned upside down.
Daydreamed about Star Wars, or Tron, or anything remotely fantastical, all the way through school, then went to art college (inspired by Joe Johnston, Ralph McQuarrie and Moebius). Picked up a basic diploma, then hit real-life, masquerading as (among others), a fish fryer, a mask maker, a prop maker for tv and theater, a dinosaur builder (for museums), and a graphic designer.
Jacked it all in at age 23 and went to Bristol University to grab a B.Ed, majoring in art.
Then I became a teacher (kindergarten to grade 6) for 10 years in London and then Toronto.
Why Toronto? Because I met my lovely wife while teaching in London, and followed her to Canada. We were married in 2000, and had two weddings in one day - a Sikh wedding in the morning (she's from Punjabi stock) and a church one in the afternoon - my morning turban made me look like an enormous, cherry lollypop (sucker to my American friends), but we had a blast.
Luckily, she met both of my wife requirements (she had a pulse and liked Star Wars), and we reveled in our Star Warsy joy, as evident by our favourite
Gentle Giant bust and our
licence plate.
Yes - droids were very important to me back then, even before FX-9 rolled into my life.
Wifey knew that I was chomping at the bit, eager to get back into movie making, and so we upped sticks and moved to California. I love it here! I can walk into any Starbucks and say "Anyone want to make a movie?", and a hundred hands go up.
I'm mainly helping out on low budget horrors (which I love), and usually end up making myself up as an extra (
this piece was applied in a car rear view mirror in pitch black at 3 a.m. - hence disheveled appearance). I'm finishing off two straight-to-DVD horrors this summer, so hopefully they'll be on the shelves next year.
I have written six feature scripts and a dozen shorts. One is doing the festival rounds right now (it's called
Moving, you can even IMDb it!), and I have a couple of investors right on the cusp of stumping up the cash to make a couple more (larger budget) features - so fingers crossed.
No kids yet - but wifey keeps stamping on the floorboards, yelling something about a 'biological clock'.
That's about it - there's tons more, but I don't want to bore you.
So now you know the man behind the droid (and if you haven't read any of FX-9's decryptions, go
here for assorted ridiculousness).
Cheerio for now - may your servos never clog.
BTW - Number of items in our Star Wars Collection (at last count): 1,989. Not quite Steve Sansweet, but then we haven't got a barn.
