Howdy doody,
Now, forgive me if I accidently retread on old ground, but Ive only been blogging for a few months.
As I stated in my bio (
see last post), I am a huge fan of short fiction, and believe that practitioners of the art are among the most skilled in the field of writing. I say this because I write quite a bit myself, and am well aware that one cannot skimp on story stucture just because it is ten pages long rather than one hundred.
Squeezing in sufficient acts, engrossing protagonists and antogonists, while also developing an arc and a satisfying conclusion all in the space of a pamphlet is not an easy task, and I have long admired writers that are able to do this.
In my youth, I devoured Roald Dahl's
Tales of the Unexpected (reprinted as
Skin I believe), and my love for the short, snappy subject, led me to the short fiction of Larry Niven and, in particular, Frederic Brown. His short stories in the collection
Nightmares and Geezenstacks inspired me no end - and shape the way I write short scripts for films.
However, this is a Star Wars blog, so enough dilly dallying.
Of all the Star Wars fiction I have read, the books that I continually dip into are the ones that make up the '
Tales' series, edited by Kevin J. Anderson and
available in an omnibus if you haven't read them yet.
Wonderful stuff!
The books in this omnibus are my particular favorites, being
Tales From Mos Eisley Cantina,
Tales from Jabba's Palace and
Tales of the Bounty Hunters.
However, this got me thinking why, of all possible topics, have we not seen
Tales from The Pit Lane?
The very thought of a book full of short stories featuring the brave participants of the Boonta Eve Classic makes me as giddy as a schoolboy. And why stop there?
How about
Tales from the Temple (featuring the known Jedi from the films)? Or how about
Tales From the Front (Clone memoirs)?
Can you think of any more possible compilations?
Oh, and if there's any authors or publishers reading this, and they decide to go with
Tales from the Pit Lane, I might not have an agent yet, but I'm ready to write a pit droid tale
On another literary note, I just picked up the New Essential Guide to Droids. Jolly good read too (nice one Dan). However, it also highlights FX-9's sloppiness when it came to the facts, so I will be forcing him to amend some of his
data chip decryptions accordingly!
Have a nice evening.
