So, I've been thinking about Yoda and Obi-Wan going into hiding following Order 66. Obviously Yoda is a pretty powerful Jedi, and more and more of late we've seen that Obi-Wan is pretty powerful.
I guess I should explain that a bit. For whatever reason I've never really considered Obi-Wan to be particularly strong or important in his role as a Jedi. There's no reason for this, and of course this view is in spite of his placement on the Jedi Council. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I kind of think Obi-Wan survived Order 66 because he was not with his Clone unit. It was dumb luck on his part.
Yoda on the other hand survived because he could sense it coming, and attacked first. This begs the question, was Yoda able to sense it coming because he was powerful enough to do so, or because he had doubts about the clones and their origins all along so was therefore predisposed to such feelings in the first place? I'm going to lean towards 'he was just that powerful' with the caveat that I think we will see more and more of Yoda's affection for the clones in the Clone Wars series (a la 'Ambush'), which would discount a predisposition.
Now for the What If? What if Mace Windu is not killed by Palpatine, but everything else remains that same: Palpatine is revealed to be evil, and issues Order 66. Does Mace survive Order 66?
I can see both answers. Mace is awfully confrontational, so I think he likes the clones in that they are warriors. There's no 'War does not make one great' for him. I think that may blind him to any premonitions of danger from the clones. On the other hand, we are told he is very powerful, that strength could enable him to sense danger earlier than other Jedi.
Even if he does make it, is he patient enough to go into hiding, or would he quickly try to counterattack Palpatine, and could he beat a recovered and rested Palpatine? Even Yoda couldn't beat a weakened Palpatine.
In the end, I'm going to go for this sequence: Mace survives Order 66, quickly goes after Palpatine, and loses.
