In Defense Of Ziro The Hutt
So I'm not writing my own review of Clone Wars since I've posted on most everybody else's blog on the subject, but I figured I'd devote this page to my defense of a much maligned new character. Am I the only admirer of Ziro The Hutt?

Here's why I thought he was an intriguing character...he's based on Coruscant, right? We've never seen an "urban" Hutt outside of Hutt controlled space. Ziro is totally a product of his surroundings. Being more Cosmopolitan, he speaks Basic. I had no problem with that. All the body art? That's the height of fashion for the Coruscant "elite." Look at all the Twi'Leks in the club in Attack Of The Clones. Body paint galore. If Jabba is the Caeser of Hutt crimelords, Ziro is the King Herod. Think of The Godfather - Jabba, Gardulla, these are old school Sicillian gangsters - Ziro is like Moe Green in Vegas. He's even more of a hedonist than Jabba, and he's obviously not traditional by any means (putting his own interests above familial ties, which I don't think is a traditionally Hutt trait). Also, I loved the fact that his enforcers were almost all droids. What's the story (ahem) there?

As to his effeminite affect, it was downright creepy to me! What a great characterization! He reminded me of (as I've said elsewhere), Truman Capote (the author of In Cold Blood and a trippy personality in his own right) cooing in a slippery southern drawl in furs with a peacock feather in his hat. Anybody ever see him in Murder By Death? Check it out. That IS Ziro The Hutt.

UPDATE ---

Ha! Whaddaya know? It WAS Truman Capote...

I don't get the big hairy deal on Ziro either. I found him amusing. Maybe the issue isn't that Hutts can't speak "Basic" but that Jabba chose not to because he didn't have to.

I certainly enjoyed him, for all the reasons you listed. He was a hoot, and I kinda enjoy that he's dividing fandom in a completely different way than Jar Jar.

To tell you the truth, I think he's gross!

But I'm kind of getting used to him, I suppose. I liked the droids, however.

You shed some light on the subject of Ziro, Caledre. I liked the history that you wrote about in your first paragraph. But...I'm still a hater.

Thanks, ace - I guess it's not a character with a wide appeal...:)

I just read that he's Black Sun (I guess it's in the novelization). I wondered about all the suns on the IG-Lancer droids he was using. That makes him even more of an iconoclast when compared to the typical Hutt gangster, I'd say.

Another comparison could be made to Sato, the young Yakuza gangster from the movie Black Rain who sort of bucked all the traditions, compared to Sugai, who was an old school Oyabun (uncle). To contemporize, ironically the guy who played Sato played the one Yakuza who objected to O-ren Ishii Ii's seizing of power in the movie Kill Bill and was subsequently executed. I think of Ziro as an upstart among Hutts. Anyway, I liked him (if you didn't guess).
