Did people really believe Darth Vader?
I just watched The Empire Strikes Back again for the umpteenth time today. While I was watching it, I tried to procure the full experience out of the movie. By trying to unlearn that Vader was Luke's father. While it was extremely hard, it made the film a lot more interesting, especially the lightsaber duel, so I wasn't questioning myself how far Vader would take the fight. Unfortunately, due to popular culture, I learned centuries before I watched Empire that Vader was Luke's father. So, this was a good experience. Others should try it. I tried the same thing when Yoda first came to Luke on Dagobah.

But I had a hard time wondering about, did people really believe what Vader was saying? If I lived in 1980, I would have left the theater, with a suspicion of Vader was merely lying to convince Luke to join him, merely on the Emperor's orders, and that would have been clarified in the next movie. I have been trying to find something on this on the Internet, but I guess everyone believed Vader. However, if you did live in 1980 and saw Empire, if you could shed some light on this that would be great.

Another thing that had me thinking, was how big a spoiler this fact would be. I just can't put my finger on when it became a well-known fact and ceased to become a spoiler.

how big a spoiler this fact would be The good thing about Star Wars fans is that we don't spoil things for others, i.e. coming out of the movie theater in 1980 (yeah, I was there) we were all in awe of what was just revealed, but didn't say anything in front of the long line of people that were waiting for the next showing.

I can't even put into words the shock value of that line "No, I am your father". That is actually one moment of my life I would LOVE to relive. I was in high school at the time, And Star Wars back then, as it is now, was very much a part of my life.

Did people believe Vader? I sure did! :D

Great entry!

Exactly what I thought, he was lying,... after all he was the ultimate evil... he would say anything to get what he wanted...

That is actually one moment of my life I would LOVE to relive.

My sister, who'd already seen it once, nudged me in the ribs with her elbow and whispered, "What do you think about that?" LOL

When I heard Darth Vader utter those words to Luke for the first time, I was stunned. And, yes, I had a strong hunch he was lying to our hero. X-( And all to turn farmboy-turned-Jedi Luke to the dark side. ]:) Emerging from the theater with my boyfriend (now husband) - and finally being able to talk - the question of whether DV was telling the truth was the first topic of conversation. "Well," my then boyfriend began, "Vader in German does mean father. He could be Luke's father." Ewwwwww, I thought to myself. Say it isn't so. Our hero can't have such a dispicable father! Of course, we know the truth now.

And there you have it.

When I saw Empire back then in 1980, I thought Vader was just trying to manipulate Luke. We didn't know too much about Vader then, and he seemed more machine than man. So how could this machine be his father? I was definitely shocked at this announcement by Vader, but I also had my doubts.
However, we did learn otherwise!

Well................I wasn't born in 1980, but, if I was.......I don't know what I would have thought. It definately would have been a hard to believe surprise. The way Luke reacts after Vader tells him seems to be proof that Luke knew that Vader wasn't lying.

In 1980, I definitely wasn't sure whether Vader was telling the truth. There was much discussion on the playground about whether he was lying or not. In the leadup to ROTJ, there was a lot of talk at my elementary school about if we'd find out that Vader really was Luke's father.

It was a big controversy. There weren't message boards, but everyone was talking about it. I think the majority of fans didn't even believe it... or didn't want to believe, at least. Good times.

I agree. I was 9 years old when I saw TESB in theaters, and Vader scared the bejeezus out of me. In my mind, there was no way that monster could be our hero's daddy.

Yep, along with the other old foggies who actually saw the OT in theatres I thought Vader was lying.

As for the mis-quoted line, that really irks me. Especially in the new Blockbuster commercial. They are the movie people and they got it wrong Saying "Luke, I'm your father" when we all know it's "No. I am your father!"

I was a young kid back in 1980, and like RJ, I debated with friends as to whether Vader really was Luke's father. At first, I hated the idea that Luke, who was a close to a hero (besides my father) that I had could be related to such a villain. That was me being a kid. As Return of the Jedi approached, and I was slightly older, I got more and more used to the idea and couldn't wait to find out if it was true or not.

I thought he was lying. I remember saying "Luke, Vader's just telling another convincing lie to trap you. Don't believe it."
